Get me off Steam, please!

I did not buy FFXIV through Steam by choice. The SE website kept erroring out on every credit card I tried (three), so I had to go through Steam just so I could pay and play.

Customers stuck on Steam are clearly second-class citizen. We cannot buy the expansion (yet). We have no idea if we'll actually get early access. We will never be able to buy the physical CE.

I would happily pay a good deal of money to get off Steam. I'd buy a new game + expansion + pay an extra fee if I could get off it. Why is this not an option? Why are we not treated like other FFXIV players?

Did you not try other retailers? Pretty much all the big names had it here in the US...both in stores and online--including Amazon and Newegg. If you are overseas, that could be another story...but still, I would imagine there were alternatives besides just SE store and Steam?

Edit: To explain further, Steam is its own platform, like PC and PS4 are. "Just buy from somewhere else" is like telling a PC player to just buy a PS4 version. It won't work. :/

I understand that.. OP was saying he/she had no choice but to buy it originally from Steam because the SE store would not take their card. The game was available for pre-order from multiple places and not just Steam and SE. I in fact pre-ordered and downloaded it from EB Games/Gamestop and had Beta4 Access and Early access.

Otherwise, you may be able to register a normal PC license to the account as well. You can in fact register both a console license and PC license to your same account. It should be doable to register a PC license as well as the Steam license, especially if it is in fact as you stated--essentially just another platform like PS3/PS4. People are already playing on both PC and console. So it should be possible to buy a PC license, install it, apply the code to an existing account, etc.

The questions are whether anyone has tried to do it yet and whether it was a simple process though SE AM and/or Mog Station, or if they had to get customer service involved.

A "PC" key doesn't count as a Steam key, and they can/will not make our accounts non-Steam accounts. You may of course purchase a PC copy of ARR, but that's treated as a different account, i.e. new characters. Starting over completely.

Not necessarily. All the OP would have to do is find a regular retail copy of the game. Characters aren't locked to a specific platform. I went between PC and PS4 without a problem, all the OP has to do is register the regular retail copy with the same account.

That's bass-ackwards then if that is the case.

And I'm not talking about switching the license either. Talking about adding a PC license--so you would have a Steam License and a PC license. In the same way you can have a PC license, a PS4 license, AND a PS3 license on the same account.

Looks like SE screwed the pooch on the PC licensing scheme.

Have 1 steam game. Skyrim required it. If I can avoid steam I do.

I wish you were right, but you're not. If you buy a different platform, your account is still locked to Steam -- you need to start a new account on a new platform, thus you lose your old characters/account. (Or more exactly, they're still stuck on the Steam account.) You cannot just buy for a different platform and log on through what had been a Steam account.
