The reason you think this is because, at the moment, XIV's jobs are incredibly simple.

An easy example: SMN and BLM. Which would you choose at the moment? BLM. Why? Because it offers better damage. That's it. That's the only reason. SMN literally doesn't offer anything else that would be beneficial to this encounter, or that encounter, and when it does (in the form of being able to multidot) it's to increase damage.

Why do people use Ifrit over Garuda when the boss is mainly stationary?

    He deals more damage.

There's no complexity, at all. Right now we have 3 pets: Titan, Garuda, and Ifrit. Titan tanks things and is largely useless in everything that isn't solo content (except Ramuh EX before they changed it). Garuda is a ranged DPS that....... does damage from range. Ifrit is a physical DPS that...... does damage from melee.

That's literally the extent of what these 3 pets do. Ifrit has a stun that's largely useless due to it being unreliable (similar to Selene's silence), and Garuda has a push back that doesn't work on.... well, anything. That's pretty bad design for a job that's supposed to revolve around these pets, and it's why you could literally remove the pets from the equation all together... which is what they're doing now. They've realized that they've essentially made a job that has no reliance on their pets at all, so they're just giving all the abilities to the Summoner him/herself and ignoring the pet altogether.

Which is ok with me since I'd rather they went in a completely different direction than what they've halfheartedly attempted to do with the current SMN. They're clearly not cut out to design something as complex as a pet class with actual useful pets, so just funneling any ideas they have onto the SMN itself is fine. I would, however, like more than just one Summon to channel - Bahamut is cool, but it would've been nice if they gave us a Shiva/Levi/Ramuh ability as well. Y'know, actually solidify the direction Summoner is meant to be going in rather than just give us Akh Morn that feels completely out of place with the rest of SMN's kit...

But I digress. Maybe SMN will be more developed in a future expansion since they've pretty much given up on the pets, but for now it's at this awkward middle state where it doesn't know what it wants to be. I am judging a bit prematurely, I do know that they talked about reworking the pets a bit so maybe they're adding some kind of useful choice between the three, but as they are now... pets aren't too... special, and that's a bit weird on a job specifically about pets.

But at this point Ive accepted how the job is and given up hope of something more akin to FFXI. Ill settle for pet glamour as long as they look decent.
There is no such thing as a "classic" FF summoner as each Final Fantasy did Summoner differently. This is just FFXIVs version.

    You want to play /WHM?

They kind of ran themselves into a corner with SMN in FFXIV because they can only add so many summons that actually do different things. So it's not surprising that they want to give us "glamour" egis instead. But if they go this route, they need to make them actually look better (better not bigger).

I don't really have a problem that SMN revolves around DoTs, and that they actually have stuff to do besides giving commands to their summon.

Everyone has a right to their own opinions and feelings, so sorry you are disappointed at the changes/additions being made to SMN in a few weeks when we can actually play with them and see how they work.

Me personally, i think i'm gonna get a big kick out of exploring a more mystical side to the job. Letting a ridiculously powerful deity who single-handedly devastated the vast majority of a continent in one go, use my body as an avatar on a regular basis is-let's be real-pretty fricken badass in theory. Dying to try it out.

As for SMN from FFXI...I loved that job, but it was deeply flawed for years. And arguably, one of the things that iteration of SMN needed above everything else was something for the actual SMN to have something to do that was intrinsically part of the job and not from a subjob or dependent on having a summon out. Ironically, FFXIV's SMN goes the other way and is actually a much more solid job for it. And it can only improve from here.

I agree with this, in some ways XIV smn is more accessable, easier to play definitely. And I also agree XI smn was flawed in some ways that couldnt be fixed, which led to smn class stacking for many things. But overall I liked the concept of XI smn more than XIV, I was hoping for some tweaks to the system but generally would be similar. XIV smn is something I wouldve never pictured smn to be, slow death, no buffs, and 3 small summons. Massive disappointment to classic smn fans.

Overall I appreciate balance over everything so while I dont like how smn was presented on XIV I can still applaud SE for keeping a decent job balance, and just choose to not use smn lol.

I actually have to agree with you Peachy, I was hoping we could tweak the 11 system, maybe remove the constant MP drain, but that's what I would of liked, SMN here is not SMN, and I hope they do fix it. But over all the game is indeed good.

Seriously, the FF11 smn was literally *summon avatar* and then make him do all the work.

They tried to give the SMN in this game something to do while the pet did things, because sitting back while your pet attacks wasn't exactly an amazing or innovative experience.

Honestly, the most innovating summoner i have seen in the entire franchise was Yuna in Dissidia 012.
