How about instead of a more expensive option vs. least expensive option we have a war ship/cruiser ship option vs. express option.
1.) Include an express option. Instant teleport, gil fee is levied and non refundable.
2.) If you just want to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of flying over Eorzea, choose the cruiser ship. Doing tasks for the crew members will cover your airfare if you so choose. Tasks could be themed toward disciples of the hand such as:
- attending the kitchen (CUL)
- controlling the furnace (ALC)
- repairing the sheets for the bedrooms (WVR)
- creating fasteners for emergency parachutes (TAN)
- fixing the delicate instruments for the airship so that it stays on course (GLD)
- repairing the furnace (ARM/BSM)
- repair or patch the hull/deck (CRP)
You could add scenarios to include the DoLs too:
- Collect high quality catches from the chef's holding tank stored beneath the deck. (FSH)
- Add/tend the furnace by adding coal/crystals to the furnace/engine(MNR)
- Arrange a set of flowers for a VIP passenger that the crew couldn't get around to doing (BOT)
This could be an ample opportunity to include different game mechanics for the DoL's rather than a hot/cold game.
You could also play Parley or Triple Triad with a number of the passengers or crew members. Perhaps a crew member wants your opinion on what should be done with <insert situation here>. Seeing as how you're a <insert Class here> you'd be able to offer some good advice? Yes? No? Prove your worth and use your powers of negotiation to persuade the crew.
3.) If you choose the war ship, with a party of two or more. You're guaranteed to fight some Garleans/Air pirates and if you're successful you're airfare will be waived and you'll even get a bonus of some kind if you're successful in your mission. You could even include a 'losing' scenario where your ship crashes or you are taken aboard their ship and are forced to escape, slightly inconveniencing you by not arriving at your destination directly. It's an aggressive mission from the outset so there's a good chance you'll get the drop on them but sometimes they can get the drop on you, adding a pre-emptive attack advantage/disadvantage to the whole thing. You could even make this instanced content and just get crazy with how dynamic you get with it. You could involve multiple outcome scenarios. Different drops. Could make it really difficult or passably easy depending on developer choice.
You could also tie this into the grand companies and have it be a repeatable way of acquiring seals and what not.
Private Airships
Privately owned airships could be a great get away option for linkshells. You could also implement them into the whole travel scheme as well, sort of like how you could explore the airship interior in Final Fantasy VII. There was an area for chocobo stalls, a sleeping quarters, etc.
You could even add a PvP element to them and have special instances where linkshells could "dogfight" against each other. Instead of just implementing a 1v1 kind of PvP you could have different classes or jobs control different aspects of the ship. The crafting classes could be utilized in this manner while the battle classes could be used to defend against uwanted boarders from the enemy ship. This way we could create our own content that involves strategically utilizing all of the classes together, not just the battlecraft classes.
You could implement this concept into PvE airship content as well.
Also, private airships have the benefit of potential customization. Furniture, decorative shields (your linkshell crest) and other miscellaneous "perks" could be added to give your linkshell's airship that special feel.
The linkshell members could choose to put their retainers on the airship and set up a shop just for the linkshell, like a linkshell bank. Everything being non taxable as it would be in international airspace and you'd be sacrificing marketability and viewership for reduced prices. It would be akin to putting stuff in your bazaar that only your linkshell members or people you chose to invite could see.
I can't see how this does not meet everyone's needs while simultaneously adding meaningful content to the game.
Please don't force me to AFK sammich on the airship.
