They should have completely redone the existing ilvl so that a character maxed out in existing end-game gear was i50, then had the gear you get at 60 be, gasp, i60. It could then actually be divided up into RARITY (you know, that color system they have on the names of the items that currently means absolutely nothing).

Example: Ironworks Weapon currently is i125 (color is meaningless). Augmented is i130 (color still meaningless). Dreadwyrm is i135 (yep, still meaningless). Instead, they should all be i50, with Ironworks Blue rarity, Augmented Purple rarity, and Dreadwyrm Orange rarity. Each rarity tier would function like the 5 point steps in ilvl. It would also represent the fact that each is harder to obtain than the last. This would keep the ilvl number from becoming ridiculous and completely detached from reality, which it already has done.

The max ilvl could be i999 and it would have the same meaning as if the max ilvl was i200 if done properly, what matters is how are stats increase with the intervals of ilvls. ilvl is just a number attached to gear to signify linear progression. The jumps it makes are negligible in the face of stat progression.
