I can understand not wanting this suggestion, like you said there are legit concerns about overcrowding and the like, but you're on shaky ground if you base your argument on it not fitting the Final Fantasy archetype. Music is all over Final Fantasy, its in its blood. As a video game series it has some of the best music in the industry, its no wonder that music spills over to the lore of their respective universes and not just in the form of music based combat classes.

In most occasions in FF, playing music has some sort of effect associated with it. There have been breaks with this but most music hasn't been just for the sake of music itself. As far as FFVIII... I've forgotten more about that game than I care to remember, I see it as an side-layer in the mythos and it doesn't really quite fit with the themes of the rest of the games.

I did say most, not all. Yes, FF has some of the best music out there, though that music you refer to is the music we listen to while playing and isn't necessarily some soundtrack playing in the character's heads. Once again... this is my opinion, and I don't think it fits thematically to give everyone the ability to run around playing music in addition to the issues.

Note however, that I did say that in crowded areas such as the city states, it could be very limited spacing where players would sign up in an in game roster to play at their turn. In more open places where there is enough space that people wouldn't be crowded together, (such as a few of the outposts like Camp Drybone, Aleport, and Quarrymill, as well as general wilderness areas), people would be able to play more freely. If it did get annoying, allow the option to turn off "player generated music" in the same way you can turn off mounted music. You could also add a simple "mute" option for a player by player basis if you found one to be particularly bad, but you enjoyed another.....

Sadly I can only see grief coming from the sign ups for such a roster as this...

Please don't take it as me coming out and saying I am completely against this, I just don't think it makes sense in this game.
