Considering your class the last time around was basically "sub WHM, never summon because your avatars suck outside of Astral Flow" until the lv70 blood pacts were introduced (which meant instead of sucking all the way to 75, you just sucked from 1-69), were largely irrelevant outside of burn parties and weren't even considered for endgame until Alexander and Perfect Defense entered the game, I'd say you're still much better off with what XIV's summoner brought. Let's not forget you couldn't do anything in between Blood Pact timers and were designed to be inherently inefficient with MP. Also keep in mind that summoner in FFXI was this way for about 8 or 9 of its 13-year life.
I do have to ask SMN main players: Do you think adding abilities to current egis and just letting you change the look of the egis is better than adding new egis in-game? The fact they're going this route so early in the life of SMN tells me they're not going to add Levi/Ramuh/Shiva egi and just let you change the existing three egis to look like them. I could be (and pray that I am) wrong, but that's what it looks like right now.
Here's the mandatory WoW comparison chart for those who think you can't add egis to the game as is:
Tank Pet - Voidwalker (WoW) - Titan-egi (FFXIV)
Melee DPS Pet - Fel Guard (WoW) - Ifrit-egi (FFXIV)
Caster DPS Pet - Imp (WoW) - Garuda-egi (FFXIV)
Crowd Control Pet - Succubus (WoW)
Debuffer/DPS Pet - Fel Hunter (WoW)
AoE/Damage Aura Pet - Infernal (WoW)
