To Relic Grind or To Not

So....i stopped playing FF14 back just after 2.1 was released. I had acquired my Zenith or +1 as it was back then, and was in full Allagan/Valor before leaving. After a year of not playing I came back to check out all the glorious content that has been released and knowing that Heavensward is coming next month(already pre-ordered). The main question I have is, should I even bother trying to get my weapon to Zeta and should I worry about getting into 120 gear?

Well, all of the steps you can catch up on.....

Except the step that requires the material melds. You need 77 scroll melds for a step. I guess you can do the cheap route with accuracy. But the materia for the other stats on my server range at 300-400k a piece. That's a metric ton of gil.

So hope you are rich because everything has inflated to obscene prices ever since 2.1

Honestly, the time for the relic grind has past, as is most of the BiS gear grinds. These will all become irrelevant in a month with the new expansion, so you will be replacing them anyways.

Although Yoshi-P HAS said that owners of zeta relics will have a shortcut in the new relic weapon quest, the amount of effort that will be required to get your relic from zenith to zeta, or even from Novus to zeta, will likely far exceed the sum of both the time spent with the zeta before it expires, and the shortcut that will be received.

The best thing to do before heavensward, is to level as many classes as possible to 50, and get a sizeable sum of gil ready so that you can jump right into heavensward without any fetters attached. That is, if you have already finished the main story. if not, FINISH THE MAIN STORY, NAO!

That's pretty much what I thought. I knew the gil amount and time would bar me from even wanting to do the Zeta at this point with the cap raise and new Relic coming. I think I'll just take my chances and keep the weapon at Atma for the time and go enjoy all the new fights, dungeons, and what not.

The current Zodiac questlines will be also nerfed in 3.0

Do we have confirmation of this? I know we got confirmation that none of the new heavensward jobs will have 2.0 relics, or the ability to get Zeta weapons, so I would be surprised if they even revisited the original zodiac questline once heavensward is released.

If we can trust translators who followed what was stated at Nico Nico Chokaigi, then
Nerf to old zodiac weapons questS when expansion hits for glamour purposes

I currently have Novus, doing relic simply out of obligation. At this point I would say no, if you're starting from the beginning it's just not worth the time and money this close to expansion.

Heck I would stop myself, but I still cling to the small hope that this SCH book stacked with ACC will be useful somewhere in 3.0

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to start now, but unless RNG is on your side or you have an enormous amount of free time it'll take you longer than a month to go from Zenith to Zeta. The only real reason to do it at this point is glamour and the (currently) unknown advantage that Zeta holders will receive in regards to the next relic.

You can get the weathered i100 weapon with soldiery tomes still and then upgrade it to i110 with the items dropped in Syrcus Tower. It's no relic, but it's vastly superior to Atma and shouldn't take long to get.

With this character's death, the thread of prophecy remains intact.

    The long version:
The relic weapons are potentially the best weapons you can get at the moment, but this relies on your ability to attach the best materia which isn't cheap. They only outclass the level 130 poetics weapons by a thin margin however, with a small boost to weapon damage and stats. At this point they're largely coveted for their appearance rather than their strength as they offer no unique benefits beyond looking all gold and shiny.

    The short version:
The gil and time spent don't match the end reward.
