At least Mario 64 doesn't cause me eye strain. Not for the same reasons at least. ¬_¬

Nothing looks dark, dull, or washed out. And there's plenty of color, too. The lighting is what impressed me the most about the game. I still sometimes just stare at various areas if they have great lighting and take screenshots. :3

Maybe mess with your monitor settings, I'm not sure.
^Agreed. And I would also just like to share that I thought the cutscene of the clouds/storms covering the skies were pretty darn impressive (the one before 'Fade to White' quest). Which boggles me on what rendering technique they used for to make that without managing to not drop a single frame rate (had fraps on). Or maybe it was just me.. I dunno I think other games should take note of this. Just that part though.. not the game in general....

Now back on topic: I have both my contrast and brightness on 90/100. Playing on a 27' HP monitor (the glossy screen) and the game looks really nice. Par to FFXIII to me at least.

Actually come to think of it when I was once using my computer monitor some PC games did come out unnecessarily dark, I had to turn the gamma up on Warcraft a bit to stop some areas being too dark. Haven't had those problems since switching to a backlit L.E.D T.V however. Maybe the problem is just your monitor/T.V.

I've noticed dynamic lighting myself, you can be standing in say Ul'dah, and watch the lighting and luminescity change during each hour ingame. Case in point, when the sky is clear, everything is bright, and my character has a healthy glow, when the weather becomes overcast, the lighting transistions from bright with some blooming to softer, more muted lighting.
Sit around and watch, you'll see what I mean.

Try adjusting the colour, contrast and brightness options in the TV or video card settings. I know my TV has this annoying "feature" I can't turn off where it dims the picture when there's a lot of black and brightens when there are whites to make black look darker. Also check if you're using a preset on your TV. I find some of those "Movie/Cinema" modes on my TV make things look dull and dark as well.

You can "calibrate" (not a real calibration without a colorimeter but it's good enough) your monitor using this. The mp4 version should work well enough for a PC. It's a pretty deep topic but they have a very good instructions PDF and if that doesn't solve your doubts the guys over there are very helpful.

This is also a good starting point, if you rather keep it even simpler.

BTW if you are calibrating a PS3 don't use the mp4, the PS3 doesn't do whiter-than-white or blacker-than-black for standalone files. You need an authored format (DVD, BD, AVCHD).

are you playing the game in windowed mode? if so, check your wallpaper, the game tends to look not so dark if it's behind a dark wallpaper. Also, I would try messing with your graphic settings a bit.

What type of monitor do you have? Is it more recent? and does it have a higher brightness/contrast ratio? The game looks just fine on my monitor, even in the dark... but i'm also using digital output via HDMI.

Messing with the videocard's control panel image settings should be a last resort thing, only when a poor quality or dying screen won't let you adjust the picture to acceptable levels.

Also the game is naturally not very colorful so...

Graphic settings as in the games settings, not video card.

The game is just right in terms of brightness. it's strange to me why people would have this issue. But I also know that if you play the game on analog video output rather than digital, your missing out in quality.
