I got a SSD and NPCs pop up instantly.
But better optimization for regular HDD's would be best.

Also....DRAW DISTANCE MAKES ME SCREAM INSIDE!
The game looks so nice but seeing plants and trees and buildings
appear or look better just saddens me...
    Hope this gets fixed sometime.

*mumble* damn plants appearing out of nowhere...*shakes head as walks away and mumbles*

*watches Veran walk into magically appearing plant*

I remember first time I saw a summoned Carbuncle in FFXI. Everything around me looked old and dated, then there was this shiny sparkly white thing with at least 1000 more pixels to it than everything else on the screen put together.

    Very confusing experience :3

Then there was some guy I met that was playing through the PS2 version and saying how it looked so much better than the PC version, my response was:

"Surely sir, you jest, what jolly merrymaking you must be having, now seriously, there's no way a PS2 game can look better than what a computer with double it's power can render... right?"

If the detail of summoned creatures was also the level of detail the PS2 version got overall... he wasn't jesting...

Have you noticed this?, i'm not talking about the "Background Drawing Quality", i'm talking about the Drawing Distance, look at this pics

    1-. Far
    2-. Middle
    3-. Close

Can we have an option to choose what drawing distance have?
    ty =)
PD: We have an option in game, but it works only for objects, like trees, not textures
you speak my mind, especially in limsa and parts of gridania its just horrible to look at the "not too far away" textures.

    Fun trick:

Go to config and turn Background Drawing Quality down to 1

    Travel to Limsa

    Welcome to Legoland!

They only have background and foreground. That's okay for objects if you can't use tesselation, but for textures it looks really bad.
its seems like "no technique" rather then some kinda technique. And proper mip mapping like it is ... standard for like a decade now... (/facepalm) would help and give us a nicer feeling about distances. And it would make it much easier to implement a slider for distance controls as well i think.

Now all we need is muskets, then to run around Thanalan at night in first-person view, watching the gun bob up and down in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and it shall be complete!

but the best thing is that the few shadows the game has *sigh* pop so late, its like you run past something then the shadow pops...
