this means gladiator is pld. pld is a tank, if you want to play tank you must be pld

conjurer is whm, whm is the healer, if you want to be a healer you play conjurer, and if you are a conjurer, expect to be mostly expected to be a whm in party situations

this is their current plans to this date, and are subject to change, hopefully it will evolve a lot more in the time until execution
    You always understand.

Basically you have two options to achieve diversity: either make a lot of jobs (which would take SE forever at this rate) or make an armory system (which they already have).

Purely from a cost-effectiveness standpoint, it seems like a better idea to preserve and maintain the armory system. Using jobs as "advanced classes" means that the armory system becomes a redundant intermediate to your role-selection, rather than the tool you use to build your own role.

A million times this. If there were ever any reason to be RID of the class system in favor of a job system, it's this. And this happens way too often on different classes. Couple this with the fact that people are gonna play how they want to play... Why play a paladin when you can have a gladiator with conjurer and thaumaturge and marauder and lancer and and archer skills? Why play a healing specific conjurer when everybody else can do your job and more just as well? Even if they implement a job system, how can they guarantee that people are gonna use it to play a PLD if they have the option of playing a super class like gladimarlancherthaumacon? I'm sorry OP, but I do not agree with you. Personally, I say get rid of classes and keep ONLY jobs. I have a feeling that won't happen but, well, a boy can dream.

It seems jobs will be a sort of specialization, which i dont necessarilly have a problem with, but in that case every class needs way more than 1 to 1, for their current plans of jobs to pan out, they need like 3 times as many jobs. Otherwise they are killing many different setups, and boiling it down to essentially 7 different setups.

they will also be tying certain set ups to one job.

while i recognize they said they may add some new jobs for each class later, thats a big maybe, and a long time later. until then, it means you will only really have 7 setups/playstyles for any group content. Imagine ffxi with only 7 jobs

actually the game shipped in japan with advanced classes, you just had to hit 30 first, no new patch expansion or anything was required this means in vanilla you had
mnk war thf rdm whm blm pld drk brd bst rng which is 11 jobs.

they also had an expansion out within 13 months of the originall release that added drg samurai ninja and sort of smn

as far as the cross class thing, he said in an interview they were thinking about it, but it would be long term. Which i would say means it is more likely than not, but not guaranteed, and it would probably be a long time away, since jobs is at best currently slated for 1.21, and they are claim they will need a lot of feedback and adjustment

As long as I can eventually dual-wield pistols, I'm happy.

    Bring on the Gunner job!

Anyways, FFXI operated on a class to job basis kinda. You levelled white mage i think it was, then you could become a summoner or something else, there's no reason this won't operate the same way, and that classes will be a base with which to build on lots and lots of different jobs. This game is only 1 year old, there's still a loooong way to go and it's too early to be picking apart the first small step in it's expansion, and once SE reach the 1.21 mark and/or the PS3 version is released they'll begin to focus more on where the game is going, rather than trying to fix/build up what it currently has.

The only thing I thought strange is if Thief is actually a job. I always imaged Thief would be a class which would then expand to things like Ninja, Assassin etc. jobs, the same as Pugilists could build to Monks, Martial Artists etc jobs.

Its not really like ffxi, where you unlock a whole different job by hitting 30 and doing some quest, its like uh.... imagine in ffxi you level to 30, then you can choose a special version of the same class, which only has 1 subjob, but has a couple more skills available and acess to only one weapon. but in this case they would only have the starting 6 classes to choose from for everyone.
