That means it'll get a resultant job...

I think People are jumping the gunblade on this one. Jobs are designed to give a specific role to a party, but are not being designed to be the only roles you have to pick in a party. There is nothing saying you must use a Job if you are in a party. Instead we will have a combination of jobs and classes in a party to accommodate the needs of the party at hand. That is unless the community brands classes as weak and obsolete and shuns them from party invites, which would be the sole fault of the community not the intent of the game design.
All in all, i think it's still to early to tell with far to few details to make any kind of concrete evaluation. Also keep in mind that there are more classes on the horizon which will also have their jobs, we already see their guilds in game and will probably get these come PS3 launch.
A million times this. If there were ever any reason to be RID of the class system in favor of a job system, it's this. And this happens way too often on different classes. Couple this with the fact that people are gonna play how they want to play... Why play a paladin when you can have a gladiator with conjurer and thaumaturge and marauder and lancer and and archer skills? Why play a healing specific conjurer when everybody else can do your job and more just as well? Even if they implement a job system, how can they guarantee that people are gonna use it to play a PLD if they have the option of playing a super class like gladimarlancherthaumacon? I'm sorry OP, but I do not agree with you. Personally, I say get rid of classes and keep ONLY jobs. I have a feeling that won't happen but, well, a boy can dream. At the moment it's easy to have a tank with healing skills, and healing skills create LOADS of enmity, so the tank sits on auto-attack and heals themself whenever health gets low, they tank fine, and don't need a healer, which means the other player who's levelled thaumaturge and conjurer to be healer-specific is now inherently useless except for buffing and DD.
I think the fact of lock the jobs to only one class is a bad move... I know i know... We must wait and see, but just like someone say in this threat: there will be only one change of change battle system. So understand the worry about a critical change on a loved game.
I read we ppl like a gladiator whit sword and a thf whit daggers... Well, talk for yourself. I don't find any reason why a tank class can nit use a great axe or meaby a lance to perform his job to protect his allies. Of curse i dont want to see, and it will no have sence to see a tank whit a ranged weapon. But this is a really easy issue to solve.
Just by locking a job to certain types of weapon. PLEAS NOT LOCK TO ONLY ONE CLASS-WEAPON.
In example. A paladin will be able only to use close rank weapons. A hunter will be able o ly to use ranged weapons. A mage job will only can use magical ranged weapons.
In the other hand i read some is really interesting. More job class-specifict than only one. So Gladiator can unlock PLD, Beserker and thf. So all class will be able to especializate their own to 3diferents playsatyles. Tanks, DD, and supports. But i find this more difficult and conflictive than just allowing use jobs whit any class whit certain limitations just like the mentioned before.
Rise III, Can i have it?
A good post, and don't think I'm picking this apart by what I'm about to say...I think the fact of lock the jobs to only one class is a bad move... I know i know... Usually, in a logical sense and over the course of history, a person/soldier/warrior/knight who dedicates himself to the protection and preservation of others uses a shield so as to deflect, parry and block incoming blows, therefore reducing/stopping any damage possibly received. It would for instance, be extremely difficult to stop a bullet or an arrow with a lance, where as holding a shield up provides adequate protection from ranged weaponry as well as close-range weaponry such as swords, daggers and such.
That's just a logical stand-point on it though and I'd have no beef with anyone who wanted to tank with a two-handed weapon, or even dual-wielding swords, instead of a 1-handed + shield. If they can do it, then there's no problem.
That is concepts. I realize the "tank" art have no changes since Galkas get late.
Bt there can be ways to tank different than old-school. And i think some freedom to combine jobs and classes will play an excellent role in this matter. Letting us to experiment diferents ways to play. Meaby a pug whit pld abilitys of mitigate dmg will tank good enough to broke whit the monopoly of the gladiator...
PUG example: Evading as much he can and when he run out of dodges use sentinels types abilitys pld-exclusive. So yeah... A galdi-pld will be able to mitigate more dmg. But a pug-pld will do more dmg instead and healing him self most often.
LNC example: lnc-pld can tank agains more than one enemy at same time. Possitionning himself wisely to let the second mob betwin him and first mob. So the second mob will recive dmg from tank and from the first enemy too. And of curse using again pld-exlussive abilitys to mitigate dmg
Is just a few ideas. For there will be a champion and in some situations we only see gladi-plds. But the sence of freedom and complexity will be great i think.
Rise III, Can i have it?
Hmm... a Pugilator
Interesting idea :3
Just so you know, this is essentially the same as what the OP is proposing. It's not such a terrible idea. That is concepts. I realize the "tank" art have no changes since Galkas get late.

Id be all for being able to combine the jobs and classes in this way, especially if I can be a 'white marauder'... swinging axes and cures. mwhahahaa
Classic white mage healing style, healing staffs that even heal on melee attacks!
*repeatedly bops the Paladin round the head*
"Feeling better yet?!"
