Do you have the same problem with the story as I do?

Am I the only one that hates having a mute-but-not mute main protagonist in a story where characters normally spit out full paragraphes. A character would basically say a full page of words, then look at the protagonist and your character would just nod. I wouldn't mind if the main protagonist was a mute like Gordon Freeman, but your character talks. The story is really good and the characters are well developed, but the way they made the protagonist annoys me. Should have SE taken the GW2 route and gave the main character a voice?

Well, the real issue is that they let use customize our voices. There's about 12 of them, and it would be REALLY expensive (especially since some of the voice samples are from pretty well-known actors. In Japan, at least) to record each and every line for each and every voice. Not to mention it'd bloat the game even larger.
So they let us use our imaginations.
Plus it can be kind of jarring when dialog appears that we would never say. There ARE a few instances where we choose what to say, and sometimes it's in "Squeenixish" and doesn't sound natural.

No. I had a very specific voice and personality in mind for my character when I created her. The way things are now, I can use my imagination to fill in what she says with something that would be in keeping with the personality that I've envisioned for her.

I would find it far more immersion-breaking to have my character saying things that she would never say.

I like having a voiced protagonist.

Silent nodding and mouth moving is incredibly immersion breaking.

At least give us some text for our characters to say in non-voiced cutscenes...

I don't mind the silence I just wish they give at least 3 different options of what to say and do so we can choose how to represent our character. Mostly same outcomes but It would feel more immerse.

I like having a silent protagonist when it's a character I create. That what makes games like Dragon Age 2/3 and all the Mass Effect games less fun.

I've always despised silent protags. And yet so many of my favorite games have them.

What bothers me more is that during cutscenes our characters are completely useless muppets who'll do any- and everything they're told, or react happy/dismayed to things without our input. Even if responses don't change how the story pans out, I wish they'd let us choose from some options like during the confrontation with Gaius. Since we don't have voices anyway, why not give us at least the text-based illusion that we have SOME say in what our characters do? They could at some points allow us to pick if we want to nod, sulk, think or look angry, at the very least.

Our characters never seem to be very bright though, especially when being misled or obviously set up, so I just pretend that I'm too dumb to speak. Just point me in the direction of a big thing, and I'll crush it. Then I'll stand around shrugging and nodding my head for a few minutes while the smart weak people talk a lot. Then I'll crush something else. Maybe I'll crush a primal or two. Puny gods.

..... *mouth flaps and makes hand/arm motions in complete silence, then stops and stares at the OP* ........

In seriousness, I don't mind the silence. What does bother me is that our character don't actually -do- anything in the cutscenes. We just sorta idly sit and stare as 'shit happens'. Supposed to be the Warrior of Light that's super brave, super strong and all that awesomeness... but we just sorta sit and watch int he background when things go down in a long cutscene. Like we've become villagers every time something happens. >_>
