I couldn't agree more with the people saying levelling an alt to re-experience the story is a good idea. I have one alt, an adorable Lalafell so I can experience Eorzea from a different perspective (my main as you can see is a Femroe). My main is a SCH and my alt is a WHM (I love healing!).
My partner is an alt-nut. He has 8 characters, his main MRoe and two female Elezen (one of which will become an Au Ra when 3.0 hits) are all 50 and two of them have the entire story completed so far. His main is DRG, one alt is a NIN and BRD and the other is a MNK.
Here is my Lala alt, Banana Nana with my bf's third alt, Morrigan Geirskogul!

I made an alt because I wanted to play different races but I didn't want to change my main from Miqote. I also wanted to see the story lines if you started in other cities. I created a femRoe that started as a lancer in Gridania and a male Elezen that started as a gladiator in Ul'dah. I ended up keeping the femRoe; changed to scholar, got to 50, and got to about i111. The male Elezen I eventually deleted after realizing I would never play him. I still need to catch my femRoe up on the story but between trying to finish Zodiac weapons and get ponies on my main, I just haven't had time nor the interest.

I level mine to 15 then play triple triad with them.

I am an extreme altaholic. Even in this game. But I level alts for various reasons. My main, of course, has every class leveled (except ACN, but he'll get there)
My primary alt is a miqo'te because I missed being a cat-girl, but when I race-changed my main, my FC kind of got on my case since my name is "Mini" I also enjoy being lalafell, so it wasn't just my FC that made me change backI had always considered Mini like my little digital son. My Miqo'te alt has a lvl 50 SCH, but was very lack-luster with other jobs.
I have a few alts on several other servers and data centers in order to keep in touch with friends that transferred, or just have a character in an English speaking environment. I love being on a JP server, but having mostly only my FC to talk to gets a bit odd sometimes. (though I usually dont spend much time on my NA alt's because RMT spam drives me nuts >.<)
And then I have lore alts. One for each city-state to re visit locations and look for little discovered I may have overlooked. They're not very high lvled, but that's ok. I usually take them at super slow paces to enjoy the story.
There's also the alts I make just for the luls~ To get silly and stuff.
My Main:
My Primary Alt:
My "Just for Fun"'s:
Niki Manaj:
Doctor Wholafell
This guy here was only created because of a contest in my FC where we had to make "someone you would not like to meet in a dark alley"![]()
My Excalibur Alt
A Recreation of my very first character:
My Livestream Lore Alt:
My eye candy:
(Yes, I'm biased towards Cat-boys....though I've seen some pretty dern sexeh other races as well ~Usually Highlanders or Elezen)

I have one alt, strictly so i can have a second room in the FC house. I don't really play him, just got him high enough to get the room. If SE would let me add common rooms as the FC leader I wouldn't have bothered. I hate playing alts.
I have several alts. My main and my main-alt are both Miqo'tes (The former a Seeker, the latter a Keeper) and on my main server I have one of each race save Lala (Have two placeholders for Au Ra).

Alt have sense to play on another server.
The suggestions I have for you in terms of managing between alts is:
1) You have to love making Alts
2) You have to have a reason for making Alts
3) You have to ignore the criticism from others regards to you making Alts
Everything else will fall in place naturally as long as you keep these things in mind.
For me, alts have given me unique opportunities having 1 character just won't ever give me. I like RP to some extent, I always see other players/NPCs in the world and come up with ideas of making new characters with specific jobs, and hilarious macros. Alts also taught me in depth how the core of certain classes operate, and how to use some abilities other players rarely use. Alts have leveled my FC from level 1 to level 8, and made me tons of cash without having to deal with crafting or spirit bonding. Alts are extra storage space I can use to store stuff. Alts are also like new game + to me, revisit some old contents and give me a perspective of the game over again.
Alts are fun and a "whatever" type of practice to those who don't care for it... when you use them for what they're properly equipped for. In other games, alts are fantastic in that they serve the same (and more) reason that they do here. Speaking from personal experience, the problem comes from the willingness to level again. I know folks who level MANY alts in this game, but indirectly refuse to level more than the one or two classes/jobs. Meaning they don't have their cross class skills that their main would have and they just don't feel like leveling the same class again. These same people often attempt to bring in their alts to Coil runs and don't bother to understand how to play their class/job properly (up to par for what's needed for said content).
So unless you're one of those people, having alts should not be of anyone's concern but your own. Tons of personal benefit to be had in making one, even here. It's just a matter of what you perceive as fun or useful for your time.
