I don't have any alts right now but I'm a bit concerned about crafting specialization and FC airship crafting.

I made myself a solo FC back before personal housing just to have a house and to be able to garden. If I create an Alt on the same server, how can I get my alt into that FC? Obviously, both characters can't be on at the same time. I'd like to create a couple of alts so that I can have the crafting covered again (currently I'm 4* with Lucis in all crafts plus Lucis gatherer).

Edit; Thanks Xenosan for the advice!

    @Waeksyn

If you have a house, apply to the FC with the alt via the FC sign infront of your home. Login as your main/FC lead character and accept application

Yet I think FFXIV's Armory system kinda kills the need for a second chara.

I'm planning on alting with an Au Ra regardless, but I'm not sure I can endure the last parts of the ARR storyline a second time.
There's not much point in creating alternate characters in FFXIV because of both the Armory system and the unintended consequences of how the duty finder works. People will create alts primarily to launder gil or materials between characters because they are unable to figure out how to live with not being a (virtual item) hoarder.

But when the game has a lot of untradeables, the desire to actually repeat content to get -that- item you want to make your alternate character cute is so much more of a pain in the butt.

That said I did create a few alts of different races, but I find that I still prefer my Cat people. If we get a third Retainer I'll make an Au Ra then. During V1.0 I actually had different races for the retainers but I found something irritating about having the retainer a different race than the character I'm playing.

I have a level 20 GLD on Zalera and a level 10 THM on Jenova. I rarely play these. I made them to see what life was like on low population worlds. And to be a fake newbie who appears to learn very fast.

I checked them all for the first time in a while last night at midnight EST. There were 24 parties in the PF on Balmung and over 200 people in Uldah. On Zalera there was 5 PF groups and 122 people in Uldah. On Jenova I can't see the PF yet, but there were only 37 people in Uldah. I really don't know how people can stand playing on such a dead world!

I have a main that has all jobs leveled, so I approach my alt leveling in a casual manor

In a way it's quite fun starting from scratch: not much gil, having to run/walk everywhere (no I can use my mount), having a reason to go to these zones and encountering npcs that I forgot about, but will be important eventually. It's nice to re-experience that journey
Its a shame they don't let you replay all that and dont reset side quests when you swap to a new class on the same toon.

I have a few alts. My main gets everything - all classes at 50, quest completionist, etc. My alts don't get that luxury. My Lalafell alt was my 1.0 character so she has a tattoo and a goobbue which is kind of fun, and I can play her if I feel like being a Lala. She's a black mage. Then I have my Roes - my chunky Seawolf lady (who was originally going to be my main) and my burly Hellsguard boy, both of whom are in their 20s.

I'd suggest leveling an alt and doing the bare minimum for the main scenario quest. There are some characters that reappear later in the storyline that I didn't remember until I saw them again during their introduction (Laurentius, for example.)

I have 6 alts.. 5 of them with retainers unlocked. I just need those extra retainers to keep my inventory organized.

It's not that I use all the slots, I just really like to organize them by category. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to organize them all, but it makes crafting so much easier to just pull mats out from each character.

Other than that, I have 2 characters I play with crafts maxed out for specialization, then a third one I'll probably play later because she's pretty.

The only reason I have an alt is because at launch I couldn't server transfer my version 1 character to a server with friends. So now my v1 main is my alt...

For some alts are useless in this game. For me it's the other way around. I leveled almost everything on my main to find out you can't really use them.

With an alt I can do everything from scratch and experience the job instead of getting the gear with my main job for an alt job and then enter an encounter BiS..

There's also aesthetics. Some combinations just don't work for me (male cat caster, Roe NIN, Lala DoW etc..).

I'm planning on making an Au-Ra too. Also taking the casual leveling approach to that too. (I have a feeling AuRa+Dragoon sounds like a good aesthetic combination)

I have a problem with bag though...it fills up so fast...I wish there was another bag for crafting mats...and the main one is only for crafted items/quest rewards. I know about using retainers to store things, but it could be easier with a craft material bag. (I have so much gear in retainers it's not even funny)
