Considering the time I invested in getting my main all those 50s and all that gear and crafting gear and getting through all the content, unlocking all the content... nah I don't have enough time in my life to invest in redoing that for another character... even if I did have the time what's the point...?

I'm a chronic reroller in most MMOs - at the time I quit I had four characters at the level cap in WOW, another one getting close, and about three or four other dudes I was in the process of levelling.

This game... not so much. I've made a couple of alt characters just to see how the initial introductory scenes play out for different starting towns, and I started playing through one of the other toewns' main scenarios before getting bored. What I realised is that it's not characters themselves I get bored of, it's playing the same class all the time, so being able to switch class pretty much at will suits me just fine.

That, and the amount of busywork it requires to unlock anything in this game... Maybe one day when I've got literally nothing else I want to do on my character I'll devote some proper time to an alt or two, but right now there's just no need.

    My thought exactly.

I am an alt fiend, right now i only have two characters that i really play but that is only because i still haven't gotten that "just right" feeling from any of them so I ended up making Link Taru as kind of a joke character but he became my main, and Zarumaru is a re-design of one of my FFXI characters.

When Heavensward comes out I will be making an au ra female cnj to be my main, and two more of her i will play to 15 in ul'dah and limsa so i can pretend that it is all one storyline (to make things more meaningful)

This confuses me. An FC bank can only store items from that FC, so unless both your characters are in the same self-made guild that idea would be worthless. And in other people's FC's it may either be less secure to do so or you may not even have the permissions to store and retrieve items on all your characters. Also, to even create the FC you'd need at least 3 other non-alt members. Sounds like a lot of hassle for what should be a simple convenience.

That said, I like the ingenuity of using the marketboard to transfer gil to alts.

I personally only have a couple of alts, and I don't really use them much. I mostly wanted to experience the story from different beginnings so I created an alt for Ul'dah and Limsa respectively with my main being from Gridania. I already have every job at 50 on my main, so I don't really feel the compulsion to max out my alts.

I have an alt, partially to re-experience the story, partially to sate my need to be a beastperson but I couldnt bring myself to be a catgirl as my main. Although since Im planning to change my main to au ra, the cat tail doesnt mean much to me. I also stopped doing main story after finishing the original 2.0 stuff, havent caught up with any of the patches. At this point its kind of overwhelming, but I should do it in case I want to keep playing her in heavensward

I'd like to make an alt on Balmung just to see what the big deal is.
Also just for fun, when I want to level/play without talking to anyone I know or be bothered by anything...

but really as for that nah. Even if I could make alts on the same server (cheap sub ftw) I still really wouldn't. Even if I feel the need to make a new character, spending an hour or two in character creator usually stops that, ahah.

Also I've invested too much of my life into this one character, so yeah.

Clearly, the best Final Fantasy character is Locke Cole.

*Points at signature + a few random, unlisted, alts* I've got about 6? soon to be 7? once Heavensward comes.

My problem is "I like the way this looks but I like the way my current character(s) look" and "I want to play a character that looks [insert characteristics that could describe a personality]". It's going to be the same when the Au Ra hit - 'I want an Au Ra, but I don't want to change the look of any of my existing characters'. Playing in the benchmark was unhealthy in my Alt-itis. Now I want an Au Ra that's loud, a lil obnoxious, loves his beer and bar brawls - but will help an old lady cross the road and play with kittens. The big, loud, scary guy with the giant sword that's actually nice and buddy-buddy. o_Oa So, playing in the benchmark, I just went with what I felt described this feeling of a character best. It's the old RP-er in me that hasn't left the mind. I pretty much did that with all my characters.
Unfortunately, the benchmark also spawned a few unplanned "I want to play this, too ;-;" characters..... *Pets the femme Au Ra sitting in the save slot*

It's a pain going through the story stuff to open dungeons over and over again, but, oh well. As far as having so many alts and etc, I tend to make them major in one particular class while only having the other jobs leveled to get the skills needed to enhance what they're maining. I also use one of my alts as a "I don't feel like being social and just doing my own thing" (ironic, in an MMO) un-guilded character.

I pretty much did both these. The Balmung curiousity + an alt for the want to play but the need for space (I feel you).
Balmung is pretty nice - came across random nice people that I probably wouldn't on Couerl in the same circumstances, even if it is just their in-characterness. If you're curious about the roleplaying thing - there's no shortage of it. It's just too bad I find it difficult to step in-character around strangers, though o_Oa *has only ever RPed with old friends*

I'm preparing one as a precautionary measure in the event that the new crafting specialization system grants access to recipes/mats that are only directly available to your specialized classes. Hopefully I don't end up needing it and can ignore it after 3.0 comes out, but better safe than paying the blood price on the market for things I wouldn't be able to make myself.
