People with Alts

I got 1 alt
SCH50 with proper cross-class skills for storyline quests etc to get heavensward access.
Capped all crafting and gathering - to farm unspoiled nodes/treasure maps and for the new specialist crafting whatever in 3.0
Oh and also have desynth - money maker - until zodiac becomes worthless anyways.

Two alts. One is whm and mnk at 50 and the other is smn/war/brd at 50. I only play the whm/mnk alt, however...three characters proved too much for weekly tome capping for me.

I have an alt. I only play it when i literally have nothing to do on my Main. I deliberately set aside 2 classes to not play on my Main so my Alt would have a purpose...but when i log onto my alt, it becomes obvious just how much crap i have to redo, and it's pretty bad for morale.

Main - pure dps cat lady, probably just level ninja, monk, and bard.....dragoon's done and machinist, depending on how they are will be my "main"
Alt - pure mage au ra, only casters and healers

Might make a third if I'm ever crazy one day which'll be purely tanks but I don't like tanking so probably long shot

I'm an altoholic too. I have a few scattered around Masamune, Excalibur, and Sargatanas, and I'm considering another for Balmung when Heavensward drops. However, I haven't really touched these much.

My main and my major alt are both on Leviathan. I've halted progress on the alt until Heavensward because I'm probably going to make her into an Au Ra. RP-wise both of them are more or less a matching set, and it's fun to make stories with them.

I enjoy making alts partly because I'm a sucker for character creation, and partly because I like looking at stories from different eyes, if that makes any sense.

The only reason I have an alt is because at launch I couldn't server transfer my version 1 character to a server with friends. So now my v1 main is my alt...

The suggestions I have for you in terms of managing between alts is:

1) You have to love making Alts
2) You have to have a reason for making Alts
3) You have to ignore the criticism from others regards to you making Alts

Everything else will fall in place naturally as long as you keep these things in mind.

For me, alts have given me unique opportunities having 1 character just won't ever give me. I like RP to some extent, I always see other players/NPCs in the world and come up with ideas of making new characters with specific jobs, and hilarious macros. Alts also taught me in depth how the core of certain classes operate, and how to use some abilities other players rarely use. Alts have leveled my FC from level 1 to level 8, and made me tons of cash without having to deal with crafting or spirit bonding. Alts are extra storage space I can use to store stuff. Alts are also like new game + to me, revisit some old contents and give me a perspective of the game over again.

I currently have 14 characters altogether, and I will have more when I can make Au Ra.

Not only do I RP, so each of these characters is a different person with a different story, I also just enjoy making characters. It's kind of a hobby.

I have all slots filled on my server. My friend and I creted our own guild and brought all of our alts into it. Each character I created to main a specific job. I have one character who I plan to get all classes maxed with eventually but the rest will be maxed in 1 or 2 jobs. When heavensward release I plan to change one alt into an au' ra so I haven't done too much with that character yet.

I have an alt with the same name in Hyperion. When I found a static in Gilgamesh, I didn't want to leave my friends behind so I created the same character there so I can play in both servers. On my experience, you catch up real quick. It took me roughly a month to get to level 50, finish the MSQ and become ilvl 130, downing FCOB and stuff with my alt.
