    People with Alts

Hello to all my fellow players for alts,
I know, I know. Why make an alt when you can do everything with one class?
Well these so many different options for races and genders..i can’t have one character.. I have one other character a female. ( see nice to look at btw and when I login as her- everyone is so nice!)

She’s at lv 36 and kinda tempted to blast through main story quest to get the end of 2.55 to play as machinist/astrologian… not sure.

So how do you guys deal with alts?

I only have one alt and that's for me to re-experience the story. True, I can watch it at the inn, but it won't play all cutscenes, nor will it give you all the side dialogue that you have in between quests.

I have a main that has all jobs leveled, so I approach my alt leveling in a casual manor

In a way it's quite fun starting from scratch: not much gil, having to run/walk everywhere (no I can use my mount), having a reason to go to these zones and encountering npcs that I forgot about, but will be important eventually. It's nice to re-experience that journey

Its a shame they don't let you replay all that and dont reset side quests when you swap to a new class on the same toon.

I don't, having alts in this game is pointless. I mean you can't even send items to your alts. Alot more pratical to have everything in one char like you said.

Rubbish, I say. Make your own guild with alts and transfer items between characters using your guild vault that way.

Sure I use my wife to send between my mains to my alts guild and vice-verse but there are other ways to transfer goods. ie. Friends, family, FC mates and you can even use the MB to set your own prices just transferring Gil/items between your characters. Its really not that difficult.

You can dislike alts and that's fine, but that also doesn't mean you are correct in your assumption that you can't transfer things, even by yourself ;P

This confuses me. An FC bank can only store items from that FC, so unless both your characters are in the same self-made guild that idea would be worthless. And in other people's FC's it may either be less secure to do so or you may not even have the permissions to store and retrieve items on all your characters. Also, to even create the FC you'd need at least 3 other non-alt members. Sounds like a lot of hassle for what should be a simple convenience.

That said, I like the ingenuity of using the marketboard to transfer gil to alts.

I personally only have a couple of alts, and I don't really use them much. I mostly wanted to experience the story from different beginnings so I created an alt for Ul'dah and Limsa respectively with my main being from Gridania. I already have every job at 50 on my main, so I don't really feel the compulsion to max out my alts.

Not really, i have 2 alts just for desynthesis so im able to have all desynthesis crafts to 100 across 3 characters rather than always having 3 at a time on my main. And as someone said it "triple" my Ixali quest allowances so i can get sealeants 3 times faster for my main.
Also it gives me the ability to play "anonymously" when i just want to play solo.

Made an alt only to feed my Main character Chocobo instead of waiting for someone else in my fc to feed it

I'm usually an Altoholic. I have a handful of lvl 1s scattered across 3-4 servers. And yet I have this chara only that I play. In other games, WoW especially, I have one chara per crafting specialization, usually with a small number of differing races. Yet I think FFXIV's Armory system kinda kills the need for a second chara.

I'm planning on alting with an Au Ra regardless, but I'm not sure I can endure the last parts of the ARR storyline a second time.

There's not much point in creating alternate characters in FFXIV because of both the Armory system and the unintended consequences of how the duty finder works. People will create alts primarily to launder gil or materials between characters because they are unable to figure out how to live with not being a (virtual item) hoarder.

But when the game has a lot of untradeables, the desire to actually repeat content to get -that- item you want to make your alternate character cute is so much more of a pain in the butt.

That said I did create a few alts of different races, but I find that I still prefer my Cat people. If we get a third Retainer I'll make an Au Ra then. During V1.0 I actually had different races for the retainers but I found something irritating about having the retainer a different race than the character I'm playing.
