Oh i'm sure there are ppl that would do it. BUT for all the calls for a challenge, after a small initial surge, SoF EX would quickly become a ghost town unless SE gave it an actual reward that was comparable to the upped difficulty-beyond bragging rights on an internet gaming forum.
And seriously, does anyone REALLY think SE would even bother at this point investing more time into a piece of filler/bridging content that initially flopped? And it did flop, whatever reason you want to give for that failure.
Gears or weapons, inclusive a mount
I had read the OP and...
Following your reasoning, every single duty of the game must have an "extreme" version.
If you want show up how good you are, go to Alexander when it comes.
I agree, there is a serious lack of midcore difficulty in this game. Also a serious lack of challenging 4 person content.
"I just got my last ilvl130 Item, close to BIS now!"
"I wonder why the content is so friggn easy now...."
I want optional ilvl-synch to dungeon entry or around and some reasonable awards if you choose to synch.
Last I heard 3.1 and the Free Company Airship content (the actual Islands with NMs, rather than the Retainer Venture sounding 3.0 Airship content) is pegged at mid-tier difficulty. Not to mention something which can be challenged with however many people you want, sounds like it will effectively be what most people hoped Hunts would be TBH. Pretty much hinges on the rewards at this point though, given they're locked away behind Airships they should hopefully be a lot more mechanically interesting than Hunts, if they end up as just another set of zerg fest FATE boss style mobs I'm going to be pretty damn pissed off.Problem is: last we heard, Normal will be like full-Echo T1-5 easy (or easier), while Hard will be as difficult as FCOB Savage (if there were one)...
Which even cuts out the mid-core even worse... it's just depressing.
I'm really, desperately hoping they reveal that they'll be doing Dungeon Extremes at minimum for the expansion.
Gated behind Free Companies with a House of course, which is perhaps the biggest downside (though it also means access is limited, hopefully meaning they can be more interesting), but at least they seem to be making it accessible to Free Companies without a House with the Free Company Alliance system which should let those without a House "borrow" from those with one.
Hopefully it is something they can expand upon with updates. More Housing Wards would certainly be required, but I'd love to see dungeons locked behind Airships; Floating City of Nym anyone? The simple fact that you need to go through a Free Company to even access such content should allow them to provide a reasonable level of challenge from such things.

I'd love to at least once in my FFXIV life be able to run a dungeon that is too difficult to swarm pull and AoE everything.
the issue is that most of the player base is used to this method.
dungeons have been getting harder long with quite a few anti-speed run mechanics, if SE makes the dungeons any harder then people will just abandon the dungeon rather than attempt it like they have been doing with Steps of Faith pre-nerf (which wasn't hard just needed group to work together)
There could be a really rewarding dungeon that gives lots of extra poetics or whatever or drops rare supplies worth something on the market board that is challenging though. You need rewards to attract good players to do something challenging.the issue is that most of the player base is used to this method.
