FFXIV not in Steam Library

My friend originally bought this game on the PS3 and wanted to it launch on the PC. They purchased this game through steam and -- I think -- I don't know what the activation process looks like-- skipped the activation process and logged in with their already existing account. They said they had no use for the steam key and gave it to me. So I downloaded the client from the SE's website, and activated my account with that key, outside of steam.

Here is my problem:

This message on the Heavensward page on Steam concerns me: " This content requires the base game FINAL FANTASY® XIV: A Realm Reborn™ on Steam in order to play. "

Does this mean I have to have the game in my library in order to download Heavensward?

I don't have this game in my library, and my account is recognized by the developer's servers as a steam account. And if the above is true, I don't think I can get the expansion.

How can I fix this? Would purchasing the game on my steam account work?

Steam key is unique, acts as is its own platform like PS3 and PS4. You are right now playing your friends steam version if you used his key.

I would imagine he needs to buy HW and give you that key for it to work with this character you linked through steam.

I made the mistake of buying this MMO thru steam as well, never again will I make that mistake. It seems you are in even deeper, as you are playing a game in someone else's steam library from what I understand.

If it let's you buy the expansion on Steam (even without the base game) then you should be fine. However since it's coming up as DLC on Steam, I'm guessing it won't let you as it doesn't think you own the actual game.

Your options are therefore to either get your friend to buy it/pass the key on to you as the above suggested, or purchase FFXIV on Steam yourself (and just don't use the code it gives you/use your existing account) and then purchase Heavensward as well.

Unfortunately the second option would be better longterm (for when they add a second expansion etc), but it is a waste of your money and although you could give the new game code to someone else, they'll be in the same boat you are right now.
