    what axe is suitable?

At the moment, I have a Lv49 axe. I want to either enter Dzemael Darkhold for a Lv44 gc quest (Shadows Uncast) and get a higher rank, or go for the big finish of the original storyline with the final two quests that end it.
On the Rock The Castrum quest where I would enter Castrum Meridianum, what axe would be suitable for it? Does it have to be a Lv50 axe, just like the same level as much of the warrior gear?

I'm currently on BRD, making use of bow and arrows abit more. I may or may not have switched back to WAR by the time many people have seen this

If a lvl 49 axe is what you have then you'll be fine. The higher the level, the better it is, obviously, but it really doesn't matter for Castrum.

If it's your first trip into Castrum, any axe will be fine. Unfortunately, your party members are unlikely to wait for you to watch the cutscenes before they initiate the battles. May as well be prepared for that when you enter.

Don't be shocked if they also try and Vote Kick you for watching them. Seriously, people seem to have this disgusting attitude when running the last two 2.0 story dungeons. Watch the videos to your heart's content, though. It's your $10 a month, do what you want.

Lv 49 Axe is good enough for Castrum.
After Castrum you can start the relic quest to get a ilevel 80 axe (first relic) and ilevel 90 axe (first upgrade of the relic).
If you want a level 50 axe then buy that one you would need for the relic quest afterwards. For the WAR relic this should be the Barbarian's Bardiche (ilevel55)

This, if you'd like to GC rank up after Castrum, you can get the ilvl 55 GC weapon to ease your entry into level 50 content, but you'll quickly replace it with a primal dropped weapon, and a relic soon after

I dont remember if the older dungeons give soldiery, but you can probably purchase the soldiery weapons once you hit level 50 (Weathered Conquerer ilevel 100) , which will make tanking a lot easier. It will still be hard though since most people will probably double your ilevel.

Even if he could, there's the ST/SCoB tomestone he'd need, so not an option.

I'd say hit the MB and snag a giantsgall axe. Level 70 and quite cheap due to common materials.

The most logical path is to get the level 55 barbarian's Bardiche simply because you can use it to start the relic quest after you have finished the last 2 story dungeons and it will be sufficient enough to get you that far. Considering you have to hand the axe in after melding it for the quest you will require a secondary weapon for the Amdapor keep and primal parts following on from that, the easiest weapon to get would be the level 55 grand company weapons since then it doesn't cost you anything to use.

The hardest part will be Amdapor keep simply because you will be the only tank for that dungeon and most likely very much lesser geared than the other people you are with.

If you don't have the grand company rank or the seals (even though it would be very easy and quick to farm them) a HQ vintage bill (expensive to buy but very easy and cheap to make) probably the best sub 50 weapon and might possibly be enough to get you past Amdapor where doing ifrit, garuda and titan will mean you will likely have a bunch of high levels doing most of the work for you at that point you will have completed the relic quest line and gotten a level 80 weapon.

I'm going to disagree with some people in this thread about starting and getting a relic weapon. At this stage of the game, your best bet would be to save up some money (start crafting and sell low level crafting items if you have to) enough to buy the 110 wootz axe. Even normal quality would be perfectly fine. This will give you a huge leg up into starting to tank end game.
