Metallic Gold Dye

I've been holding my metallic gold dye for so long that I don't even remember where I got it from, or how I even got it. I wanted to use it on something I know I'll never get rid of, something that just appears so amazing that I could hardly bear to part with it.

But everything I tried using the dye on turns out undyeable. I don't want to waste the golden dye on something that doesn't look that great. Is there anything -- anything at all -- that I could actually dye, that isn't a low-level piece of equipment that's store-bought?

And is there any way to get more metallic golden dye, if I ever want to use it on something else?

The dye is a possible "rare" reward from high ilvl retainer ventures (quick exploration). Most unique dungeon/raid gear aside from Darklight is undyeable.

When Silver/Gold dyes were first introduced, it came from Quick ventures with a high ilvl anywhere between i100-i130ish(or so much gathering skill from a FSH/MIN/BTN reatiner,) I do believe, and there was a bug that wouldn't allow Gold dyes to be gathered by your retainers. So they sent 4 free gold dyes to everyone through moogle mail. So that explains where you got your original gold dyes.

And as I stated in the above, you just need a retainer leveled up to 50 and with high ilvl/gathering skill in order to obtain more, though it rather random. You could easily obtain any of the retainer dyes, silver, true black, pure white, pastel pink, purple, green, blue or purple and ofc gold!

As for things you can dye, look for the color icon in the top right of the item. For stuff like soldiery/poetics gear you need the upgraded version (unweathered or augmented) before you can dye it.

I like most of the dyed darklight pieces myself. Gold-dyed darklight boots of casting are freakin awesome

I kind of wanted to dye the Gladiator's Shawl, or maybe Hildebrand's Suit. Sadly, neither of those are dyeable

I just found out that Golden Saucer equipment rewards are dyeable. I guess I actually have a reason to go to Golden Saucer now~

I'm pretty sure there is a dyeable shawl that looks a fair bit like the dungeon dropped one on the Markets.

I only found out about the gold dye last week when I was playing with the mogstation, and I saw it in hte list of items on the account. I don't believe I ever received mine as I can't find it anywhere, and I definitely do not have any gold colored items. :P Do you recall about when they passed them out? I had deactivated for about 8 months, and so perhaps it was during this time (although I still should have received it since it shows applied on my account..)

The applied the hotfix on October 16th, 2014. If you were active at that time then they should be in the mail. You did have to be active, though, not just an existing account.

Yes it's called the "Taffeta Shawl" it's lvl 1, it's a 2 star WVR craft. It's rather inexpensive (as far as I know on my own server.) The items for it should be rather easily obtained now days. But... that just depends on your servers economy. And it is dyable, it's the same exact model as the coliseum shawl.
