It isn't the fact Steps got nerfed but more or less that "slippery slope" and the fears for the future that have players caring about this. Does SE have a line drawn that they won't cross or is that line easily erased...?
It's simply easing already existing content. Steps of faith was a story mission. SE saw some people were having trouble clearing it, so SE eased it so people wouldn't have so much trouble accessing the heavensward content.

i doubt they'll be on the slippery slope anyway...seeing how the only 'nerfs' FCOB received is echo and a single add removed on turn 13.

You don't have "Scent of a Woman" Achievement. Even if you've outgeared it stat wise Savage Coil 9 should still provide a strong challenge for you and yours. Please return to the conversation when you've completed ALL content designed to challenge members if youre going to argue challenges.

Unless what you're arguing for is more prestige, in which case you're out of luck. FFXIV isn't about Ego padding.

I agree. I get tired of all the difficulty nerfing. Most of the non-coil non-extreme content in this game is already easier than your typical MMO. But if they insist on nerfing everything, at least wait 3 to 6 months. But it's better to not nerf them at all for the reasons of players needing to get better, plus players late doing the content, whether new to game or whatever reason, might like a challenge too. I've been playing since beta, and due to being occupied with other aspects of game and getting those things caught up, by the time I get going on coil and other things they were nerfed already, which disappointed me because then I don't feel like my clear is as worthy. Luckily for me I was able to do Steps of Faith just a few days before it was nerfed.

Locking the expansion behind a gimmick fight pretty much means that they have to make it so a 2 year old playing with no limbs can beat it.

For better or worse that was the choice SE made by linking access to the expansion (that even the worst player in the world needs to have access to) with the main story of 2.X...

In general, ARR was redesigned around the goal of getting out of the niche market and being more mainstream. This basically means the game is designed to be fun for inexperienced and bad players (the mainstream) with a bit of harder content sprinkled in to keep the better players interested.

It is silly to equate how they treat the story with how they treat raids because they are designed with different audiences in mind.

Many of us would love to see more challenging content added into the game. I think or rather hope eventually we will start seeing a wider range. For now we just need to make the most of what we have been given or move on.

On a semi-related note, it surprises me how many people don't know that the Echo is 100% optional in Coil. The reason they nerf the first few turns in each set is to make getting gear easier to conquer the last turn, which remains untouched to keep the difficulty. Let's face it though, regardless whether or not the previous turns were nerfed, if you can beat the last one in each set, you have the skill to beat the other 3 when they were untouched anyway. It's not a big deal. "But Velox, the Echo makes it easier." You can turn OFF the Echo just by right-clicking on the buff icon (no idea how it's done in ps3/4). It's no different than any other personal buff. This means you can enter t13 at this very moment, turn off your Echo buff and just like that you're fighting t13 the same way people were doing it day 1!

Do some Savage Coil. Apparently still more challenging than Final Coil even with dramatic out gearing.

I do agree that all content shouldn't be nerfed through, literal nerfs and echo.

Why not add a contested dungeon, with wandering NPCs and wandering bosses and interesting loot mechanics? The deeper you go into the dungeon the harder it gets, the more mobs randomly spawn and the more mistakes you can make. The first part of the dungeon can be casual. Deeper you get the harder-core it gets.

Contested Dungeons are brutally hard for people who are used to "studying" for fights, because so many different things can happen in the instances. Especially ones where players can re-arrange the dungeon or set traps to other players.

A dungeon doesn't have to be one difficulty. It can get more and more difficult the deeper you enter it. Of course, players would be locked out of loot from the dungeon, however the previous loot from the first parts should greatly help them. You can even have the bosses drop "set" pieces.

    First Tiers:
    Feet, Gloves, Legs.

    Second Tier:
    Weapons, Helmets, Waist

    Third Tier:
Chest Plates (low chance to drop.), Jewelry

    Fourth Tier:
Chest Plates (100% Chance.), Box with any piece of jewelry or armor from the dungeon.

    Disciple of War
    Set Bonuses:
    2 (+50 Vitality, Strength)
    4 (10% Critical Chance)
    8 (10% Critical Bonus)
10 (10% Damage Reduction to this dungeon only.)
12 (10% Bonus damage to this dungeon only.)

    Disciple of Magic
    Set Bonuses
    2 (+50 Vitality, +50 Wisdom, Intelligence)
    4 (10% Critical Chance)
8 (20% Extra Damage on DOTs/Extra Healing on HOTs)
10 (10% Damage Reduction to this dungeon only.)
12 (10% Bonus damage to this dungeon only.)

Every piece of loot of the dungeon would have this effect on it.

Body Pulling, Respawning Mobs!, Training, Waiting for Bosses, Contesting Bosses, Getting through encounters, and Local (Server only) Gameplay =), No Duty Finder!

The challenge is months back, when the content was unnerfed by echo, mechanic changes and over-gearing. Apparently everything needs to be cleared by everyone, so we will have everything degraded to the weakest player's ability so they can do their hardcore end-game content too.

Far from it, considering I don't do Coils, I don't even do the Crystal Towers (only once for clears for story), EX or anything else that requires more than a couple of brain cells. If people want a challenge, that is what EX, Coils, etc. are for. Trials tied to main story shouldn't even be in the same space as those raids due to the fact that you don't have any gear or token rewarded for the effort (other than the normal scraps thrown to people so SE can tell them that they technically are being rewarded for their time)

I would raid and do all of that, but I wouldn't come in here crying a river over nothing. There are better fights to be had and this isn't one of those. Like getting rid of Echo from Coil and preserving the difficulties in many raids and non-main story dungeons.

What legitimacy is there? Read my response earlier before you edited your post. If you think you see something legit, then think again. I would understand the outrage if SE told you that they were nerfing coils across the board and allowing players to get the best gear in the game through Poetics and hunts. That is not what is happening here. A nerf to SoF is not the same as welfare gear to Tom, Harry and Janet so that they can get into EX trials and breeze through them. This isn't the same thing at all.
