I did this too. But the sad thing is, that the laugh in character creation is actually a /chuckle. I chose my character voice since it had nicest "laugh" and was pretty happy till I /laughed a year later...
I always go for the craziest sounding laugh, the one that sounds like the character has a few screws loose. I like to think my characters are villains in their own universe, so they need a maniacal laugh.
I go for the /cheer that sounds the most sexual so I can creep out my static.
I mostly go by the laugh and cheer, since they're emotes I use a lot and I don't want to cringe every I hear them.
Don't need to make a character to check out all the voices though, there are youtube videos which painstakingly go through every sound (battle voice noises as well as all emotes) for each race, gender, and voice available. When I changed back into Elezen I watched the female elezen video carefully and chose a voice I'm much happier with.

Voice is literally what made me pick Miqo'te over the other races when I joined. Voice is super important to me, and I find that the Au Ra females are leaving me conflicted D: I love the looks, but it seems there's not a voice where I like everything on it. I use /chuckle and /cheer a lot so I'm using those two emotes to gauge what voice to pick. For me it's more what I enjoy hearing over what I think fits the character, though I'll try to make them fit if there's room for it.
I wasn't looking for anything in particular...then I noticed one option sounded suspiciously like Mary Elizabeth McGlynn so I chose that one. I wasn't 100% sure, but then immediately after you make your character you get introduced to Hydaelyn...who is voiced by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. Long story short, I started flipping the **** out because she's easily my all-time favorite VA.
Cute and stupid, just like me.
Miqo'te - voice 2 because it sounded the best to me in character creation (just never /doze in front of relatives or significant others)
Male lala - the little boy voice, its adorable~ and sounds just enough like kid Link for my current main.
Female Au ra (<3) - picked the most soft sounding voice because that is how my voice is irl.
Generally i just pick whatever clicks for me based on the design and intended personality of my characters
I was kind of disappointed in the choice for Lalafell voices. There only seems to be a few which match the small size of a Lalafell, with many of the voices being far deeper and more appropriate on a Hyur or similar sized race. So, in essence I went for the only one which seemed to fit a small bundle of adorable. Childlike, higher-pitched and as cute as a button.
