It's not that people are offended by others not caring about story in a story centric (mmo)rpg, but they are confused why you want to skip it entirely (because you can just skip cutscenes and whatever else they might tell you).

Story centric RPGs like Final Fantasy games don't normally let you skip over the story to progress through the game, you can't go to a certain area or fight the secret/special boss until after a specific point in the story, that's the mentality.

The expansion is directly continuing the main scenario of FFXIV, unlike other MMO expansions that contain their own separate story (like FFXI's Chains of Promathia). It does make sense to gate content from that perspective. Just my 2 cents.

I highly encourage Square to make this known to older players returning to the game. I guarantee you half of the purchases for the expansion will not realize they cant just play as the new Jobs and will be angry. And right now there is nothing much out there with a Disclaimer that content is dependent on completing the MSQ.

Personally i think this is a utterly terrible business decision. Forcing someone to have fully used the old product before they can enjoy the fruits of the new one.
