Actually it is a fair comparison and it is exactly what you are asking new players to do. Basically to get to level 50 and to do the msq you are going to be doing every quest available and even after reaching 50 you are put on hold until you do a lot of extra stuff. Until you do those things you will be unable to utilize any of the new expansion that a new player just purchased with the exception on the new race.
At least with WoW you were not forced to do anything other than meet the level requirements so you can skip content. With SE's plan there will be no skipping.
