You might also want to consider that Heavensward content expects players to be geared to at least i90 as well. A fresh 50 in i45-55 equipment given instant access to Ishgard or its surrounding areas would be slaughtered pretty quickly. Having them do the MSQ to unlock Ishgard will also give them a chance to gear up appropriately.

As for the gating causing players to quit; maybe YOU would quit when presented with such a scenario but I personally would enjoy having to put some time into unlocking the content. It would make it feel rewarding to finally get there. Not every new player is going to see this the way you do, so projecting your personal issues onto new players seems a little silly.
