how do i put a benchmark character on an actual ff14 game?

Original FFXIV 2.0 benchmark from 2013? When you go to create a character it'll ask if you want to load appearance data and you can say yes and it'll show all saved characters including ones created with the benchmark.

New Heavensward Benchmark? (probably the one you mean) You can't yet unfortunately. Although it saves files in the same place as the original benchmark (with the same filename format even), the current version of FFXIV can't/won't read them. My guess is the character data format has changed slightly because of the new Au Ra race (which isn't yet in 2.0) and until they update the main game (3.0?) it won't be able to read them.

Best I can suggest is loading both the game AND the Benchmark Character Creator at the same time and just going through/comparing each step when you recreate. Sorry!
