One of the moons will crash into Eorzea. It will have some kind of lifeforms that consume elemental essences. That's why crystals are being drained, and the black shroud, protected by the elementals til now, will wither and suffer as a result. The archons will appear to protect their elemental domains. The Garlean empire believes they know how to combat the menace but only if they have full military control of the continent. They also believe the archons are a part of the problem.
Just a guess.

Edit: I meant to say the Primals will show up on behalf of the archons. Starting with ifrit, and the Garleans believe the Primals are a part of the problem, in cahoots with the lifeforms, along with the archons. I dunno the lore too well, but like I said, just guessing.

I think you're pretty spot on, seems this way to me too. Also, Dalamud crashing into Eorzea would be a perfect way for the developers to usher in the redesigning of Eorzea. Excitement! :-D
