Computer locking up

First, the config:
evga x58 microatx board, intel i7 950 cpu, 6gb ram, gtx 280, 9800gt, ocz 700w psu.

Played fine for ages. Occational issues/lockups, restart always worked fine, fiddling witht he drivers, etc. system doesn't like one of hte monitors and won't detect it's default resolution, so I have to switch monitor ports to get it to detect. Now as of yesterday, it locks up when am in game. That is to say,t he screen artifacts, turns neat green/purple colors, and function ceases. Restart and it's fine. I have evga precision up and gpu is fine on temp and only at 95% load. CPU is below temp as well, and only at 10% load. My guess is psu, I've tried different drivers from 260 all the way to 280.

System lists kernal-power event id 41, which i'm guessing is because i hit the reset button. Application logs show faults, sometimes it's ffxivgame.exe, sometimes it's explorer, nvcplui, mpc-hc64, it's all over the place. I'm at a loss, and open to suggestion.

Checking the PSU cant hurt, boot up a torture test to exclude it being just a FFXIV issue or not.

A stab in the dark is the GPU on the way out though, give its issue with a monitor and the artefacts, had a 8800gtx went out with funky screens going all green/purple. but def best to check rather then jump to a conclusion.
Does the monitor show up via the 2nd gpu ok?

I have to agree with Esk for what she posted. Could also be your GPU is on it's way out as well. Have you tried to shut down some of the "extra" processes running in the background that aren't needed like iTunes helper, acro reader and any other type of non needed "start-up" processes? Afterall, you don't need adobe running in the background when your not using it.

Run a few tests like Esk suggested and see what fails if anything. Hopefully not only because it would suck but if it DOES prove something is wrong, you can fix it.

Edit: Yes I know those other processes shouldn't be that intense on your i7. I'm just asking/suggesting to hopefully minimize the extra garbage to have the system run a bit "cleaner" during game play.

If your temps are fine and your video displays "artifacts" then it is a good chance the vram is bad, how old is the card(return it for a new one if under warranty still)?

This sounds very much like the soldering issue that commonly happened with the 8800 series cards (mine included). The fix is to bake the card in an oven. Follow these instructions: http://www.overclockers.com/forums/s...d.php?t=606658

Thanks. I replaced the psu with a 750w pc power & cooling, big psu to fit in a micro atx case, but I got it. First boot and it did it again. I'm 99.9% sure it's the video card. I think I'll give evga a call tomorrow. I forgot to register it, but I have 2 motherboards and 3 other video cards registered, so hopefully they'll be understanding.

If you have the invoice or such still then you have a good chance as long as its something they can identify as you as you have other products with them.
(id like to know what happens either way )

Though given the difference between the 8's and current Gen GPU's, its a good excuse to get something new and shiny, will be a huge difference (some of the 560s factory OC'd are really nice atm if your on a budget or not).

eVGA on my shit list.

I have 3 motherboards and 4 video cards registered. This video card I bought from microcenter, and couldn't get a reprint of the receipt, and no longer had the original. They said without receipt, I get nothing. I'd understand if it were the only product owned, but I have my evga x58 micro, my evga 780i and whatever i had before that registered for motherboards, and my gtx280, my 8800gtx, and my dual 7800gt's all by evga registered, and he said he couldn't help me.

So I went on craigslist, found a complete core2duo system with 4gb ram, 500gb hd, and gtx280, all for $125, and bought that, took out the video card and plopped it in. Everything works great, I'll steal my 8800gts and put it in the core2duo system and have it run my mule on a separate monitor at low res.

eVGA makes some good stuff, but that customer service I got, I'll pass on them next build.

TBF, I cant blame them. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but they have no way of knowing its your card, not one your fixing for a friend cos you have other EVGA products or something like that.
Add you did register you other products but not that one.
So the evidence seems to say you register stuff just not the broken part..

Anyway hope the new GPU works out for you!

I still say you should have baked the card. I fixed my 8800 GTX two or three times doing it and your symptoms sound very much like it.
