    You could reduce a lot of player inventory load by:

    1. Make more crafting ingredients (lvl 1-40 perhaps) available from easily-accessible retailers (NPCs).
    2. Reduce the gap between retail price and sell points; this will drive people to sell their excess inventory to NPCs, thus reducing server load (this is doubtful since SE makes $$$ off of extra retainers).
    3. Fix the BOT and RMT problem. This would ultimately remove a crapton of gil from the economy (making the 5000 gil you get from completing a level 50 quest something to be giddy about. As it stands right now, if you total all the gil earned from the main story line, you could not buy a complete set of lvl 55 gear off the MB, for any class. With this gil value increase, MB prices would drop dramatically, making selling off inventories to NPCs (See item 2) plausible.
