Does melding materia to a weapon bind it to you?

For some reason i have a lot of trouble finding information on this game. Long story short my friend and I are on our relic weapons quest and we didn't bother leveling our crafting professions. So we decided to start and my friend (DRG) went blacksmith, i was away but was intending to do armorsmithing. He leveled it up then we learned it had to correlate with your weapon so i just decided to do carpentry for him. He'd do mine, i'd do his was the idea. But i can't find if melding materia into weapons binds it to you and i'm scared to try given how broke i am and i don't want him to have my weapon and he mine.

(Side note, would it be...somewhat safe to ask someone to do it for us if it doesn't bind?)

You can meld materia and sell it on the market as long as you have not used the weapon or armor before. It only binds if you use the gear in combat or for crafting/gathering. Otherwise an unused piece of gear will remain unbound.

The only thing that binds gear is use, or using it as a glamour for another item.

Theres also a Right Click/Square menu option to "Request Meld" when other person is on the crafting class needed. So you can meld even bound items.

I was able to use my lvl 50 spear before I gave it to someone to meld, for that same quest.
