When you've reached the Jig part of fishing, all it is from there is a 'hot and cold' game. In the sense you are giving instructions if you are getting closer to the spot you need to hit or further. It's call finding the “Sweet Spot”.

I believe for fishing it was
'the fish is taking line' = you're getting cold = you're getting further away from the sweet spot
'you are taking in line' = you're getting warmer = you're getting closer to the sweet spot
(i forgot what it said for this one) = you're hot = you're really close to the sweet spot
'fish is getting tired' = you're burning up = you're hitting the sweet spot

Sometimes you need to hit the sweet spot or close to it a few times before you can reel in the fish.
If you don't see any of those text when you're fishing, then you've probably switched on the chat filter for "System Messages". Make sure you are not hiding those messages.

And some reference materials for additional reading sorted by relevance

Look in my signature. The Pro-Pullers Guide will likely help you and there are other resources that myself and other have put together on my lodestone blog as well.

I'm lv.18 fishing using Bloodworms near the Bloodshore camp. Very often, I would say in 80% of Nibble/Bites I'm getting "The fish got away." message on the first try to find a sweetspot. What am I doing wrong?

    - EDIT -

I would like to ask, what is the difference between "You feel a nibble." and "You feel a bite."?
And another question. Why sometimes I'm pulling the fish right away when I hit the right sweetpoint, and sometimes I got the "fish is tired" message even if it's the same fish e.g. Bianaq Bream?

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm level 22, my gear is up to date giving me 50 gathering, 32 output, and 41 perception. I'm fishing at Emerald Moss, which is grade 2, and the entire camp is aimed towards folks 10-19, which you'll note I'm over. I'm using Snurble Flies, and usually get the "The fish seem to be biting on snurble flies" message.

So, why is it I keep getting fish leaving on the first jig? Or, perhaps more annoying, I get fish where I only get 2-3 tries, which means not only do I not have enough attempts to play "hot or cold", but it uses up a spot at a fishing node if I'm using one. I should be quite overpowered for this camp, I'm only here to try and work on my achievements, you'd think I'd have an easy time here like with mining or botany... and instead it feels like I'm underlevelled instead of overlevelled.

If you are L10, use lures, making sure you use the most up to date gear your Fisher level can handle is always the best idea as it means less "fish got away" and more chances to reel in a catch, I fish at the lake west of Tranquil (Grade 3) quite a lot from about L12-L22 using only Chocobo/Crow Lures as they can be used multiple times without depletion, 9/10 casts gets a catch if you get the hang of the minigame.

Regarding the mini game, I always start the ball just before the word "Jig" on the left, it should tell you youve hooked something but dont have anything yet, then there is only 3 places left to hit, far left, far right and just after "Jig", if you get "Fish is taking line" you need to stop the ball on the other side of "Jig" to where the fish was taking line.

I understand your frustration but Fishing FAR outranks Botany & Miner because you have to run around like a crazy Lalafell searching for nodes that may have already dissapated whereas Fisher you can just continually cast as long as you have bait/lures, no time wasting running around!!! And it looks cool when others saddle up next to you at your fishing spot too...just like IRL, but overall I think MMO fishing is boring kinda like "Yard Work Simulator" from The Simpsons LOL :P

Nibble means you must Wait until it turns into Bite, getting constant Nibbles and no Bites means the area outranks your current level, you can still get catches but it takes far longer than if you cast at an area suited to your level.

I dont understand your last question, Fish is Tired means you just repeat the same place you last hit.
