Also his gear was all 130+ and i'm only at 95 ilvl, not sure if that really hurts me with my Axe only being ilvl 70? Thanks any willing to help me out!

Like many tanks said here - Weapon Damage is most important parameter for dmg and aggro. Weapons must be first in leveling priority. Always.

Not all tanks know this, ive run across a few where they want to main tank with lower level gear. I asked to Mt cuz i would pull hate as OT(zeta war/Aug pld) they got offended thinking I was a elitist. I literally had to slow my rotations down (sad panda) i was on pld with all Bis left and fully melded slaying. The other novus. First time I had to use riot combo 95 percent of the time.lol

Yeah, the moment you hit the level cap, there's a huge range of items levels, you can be playing with people twice as strong as you are.

The range of equipment useable by a lv50 character is i50-i135, and expert dungeons are unsynced.

Having high gear level is more important for tank players than anyone else, because it will be impossible to keep the enemies on you if you are so far behind.
