and the mini map thing is more like theres no reason to really go off the path most of the time so instead of watching the pretty world they made and spent hours on when you run from place to place you watching a line denoting a path on the minimap

this would -easily- be fixed by implementing agro mobs so people would actually have to watch the game and not the map.
I see your point. Chocobos are only going to make the 'follow the yellow brick road' method even more popular.

Kinda nice then that gathering forces you off the beaten path, sometimes into areas you've never seen before. (I went fishing in Mor Dhona just so I'd get some eye-candy whilst getting 'materials' to turn into shards and sand)

They did mention somewhere in a dev blog though that treasure chests were going to be added into the game as an open world thing, you don't need to be in a leve now to find one, you could just randomly come across one. If there was information on what kind of things we could expect from random treasure chests, it may give more people reason to wander into the wilderness.

However not knowing what you may get then receiving a 'blue' weapon or item of clothing could be more exciting.

Maybe they could just give hints. Hold the surprise, but let them know that there is indeed a surprise.
