Now, i will turn that question back to you.

Is an instanced, insta-port transportation through a click of a button dumbing down what would have otherwise been a flight schedule that you have to tend to and consider every once in a while and time with your own schedule and an Airship ride you have to hop onto and experience?

It is dumbing it down because it removes from it the very nature that it's supposed to reflect, it's more of a teleport than an airship ride now. Is that true or not?
Lol, No. Plus I don't believe they ever said you don't have to wait for the ship to arrive or not, all they said was that the ship is going to be insta travel. If that be the case is it in no way shape or form dumbing it down.

Save the airship ride for an actual ride which should be dirt cheap to make up for the few minutes it takes. It comes down to an issue of balance, for me.

That being said, I understand the devs eagerness to implement airships, and a convenient way to travel from city to city without using anima. I think this is a good move, I just hope they tweak it in the future, when zones are redesigned, airship instances are added, etc. and so forth.
It is teleporting because it is instant? That sounds kind of dumb but I do understand what you are trying to say. Most of you forget the point of making it this way though, the point is so they could fit it into patch 1.19. I rather have airships in 1.19 than have to wait atleast another 3-4 months for them to come in the next patch and the only difference is you have actually see yourself on the ship for a few minutes. (which majority of the people go afk during that so what's the point anyways?)

Also FFXI's airship really kind of lacked immersion for the fact yes you was riding on a ship but you was not actually flying over your world during play. You could not ever look down and see creatures or other players or anything of the sort. You was just on a instanced treadmill that gave the illusion of traveling on an airship. I hope they make it more real time instead of that dumbed down crap.
