at least not without some drastic and fundamental change in the way we play and interact with games/mmo in general.

you've grown up since your early days as an mmo gamer, expansive worlds are no longer something new, but rather the norm. I myself still look back on my early FFXI days with rose-tinted classes of nostalgia, but I know that those feelings of finding something so different and completely new isn't gonna come back, because, well, they're no longer different or new.
