There's a frog near Phaia that only appears during rainstorms in the Black Shroud. A lot of people didn't even know little Ala Mhigo existed despite it being written on the map in Eorzean. There's a giant glowing mushroom monument in the Black Shroud. An NPC by the name Immodest Mouse says in the opening lines of his text: The ocean breathes salty.

None of those little things would be experienced if the immersionist did not seek them out. Immerison is not a one way street nor should it be forced on players. This is even more true as the medium is more interactive. Less true for less interactive mediums but I've given an example in my post earlier of how even less interactive mediums utilized choice in order to add immersion.

Isn't that the whole point of exploration. Forcing exploration on people defeats the merits of exploration in the first place.
i like and support your thread for airship ideas, but part of an immersive world is doing things with random people. And if you make airships an instance, that can never really happen. By instancing everything and not creating open random content you force players into niche linkshells and make it difficult for a new player to fit in. When you have open content (selbina-mhuara ferry, moat carp fishing, etc) you create avenues to make friends and improve the game. Behests were a great idea, and have now been essentially ruined.

and while i understand the argument for choice. A game that has failed needs to pull people in and GIVE them a reason to play. Presenting an open invitation for people to explore and choose how to experience a failed game won't work because they will just feel like they are exploring a dead world and playing a single player game and give up quickly for a game with an actual dynamic living world.

It's funny you should say that. FFXI had more instant travel than FFXIV did. FFXIV only has the Anima system, that's it. FFXI has--well let me list it for you:

    - Home points (Warp spell, death, certain items)
    - Teleport crystals (rings and spells)
    - Escape spell (get out of any dungeon)
    - Outpost warp
    - Windurst warp tarus
    - Whitegate warps (to and from Jeuno and starter towns)
    - Staging point warps
    - Item-based teleports: Tavnazia ring, Olduum ring, Duchy ring, Maat's cap, Trick Staff II, Warp Cudgels, etc.
    - Campaign Arbiters (travel anywhere in WotG areas)
    - Abyssea maw warp (travel from Jeuno and starter towns to any Abyssea maw)
    - Verdical Conflux warps (travel between different parts of an Abyssea zone)

Hell, instant travel in WotG alone is less restrictive than in FFXIV since you can quickly earn more currency with which to teleport if you ran out. You should be complaining that FFXIV is too restrictive if you want to compare it to FFXI!

But the ironic part is, the slow-moving transportation in FFXI is almost always empty and unused. Has been for years. There are so many other (and better) options out there. That should be your first clue that not even hardcore FFXI players are interested in that concept anymore. It doesn't make the game. It breaks it.

You're just pushing for a design people in FFXI don't even want to use in their own game! I doubt you have the ability to speak for the typical FFXI player at all.
Durrrr, log onto FF11 now and everyone is in abysea so of course there is no one on the air ships, all old content is obsolete. Just embarrassing seriously... you need to step away and look at the big picture out side of instant travel and notice the overall trend of the game, which suffice it to say is far opposite from FF11, this how they are alienating their nich crowd.

And as to claiming to be the typical FF11 player i was pre abysea, however you are right my voice is not the voice of all FF11 players.

Airships have been empty for years and years, way before Abyssea came out. But I guess you haven't played 11 in awhile. We've moved on. Obviously, you haven't.

You still didn't clap your hands and turn up wherever you wanted either. Fast travel in XI always had some sort of downside wether it being the quest to get the teleport spell or the trip to get your outpost/craig crystals. Or the Besieged/Campaign you needed to gain points to use to warp all willy nilly.

I think XI did it right it allowed alot of transportation options but also had easy to obtain but limited supply of said warps.

How is waiting on an airship "challening deep immersive content"?

Answer: It's not. It's purely a timesink. You want "challenging deep immersive content" on airships? Then like the OP in the following thread or add some substantial concepts to it.

Liked it, and it had good ideas.... people want to just skip content and have a easy mode insta port. I say that not only should you have to ride the air ships but you have to participate in some dynamic content. You sure are jumping to conclusions a lot tonight clean up your posting.
