Connecting the DoTs: A Summoner Guide

Alright, derpy question inbound.
I love SMN (because I can rezz and a DPS) but I feel like I do a terrible job when it comes to damage. I'm usually always on the bottom of the enmity bar, except for initial pulls, and only thing I leave out from my rotation are the pet commands. I just leave them on sic for the most part.
Is that what's affecting my DPS? Or am I just a terrible SMN? Is it okay to leave my pet on sic and occasionally give it commands?
I enjoy the class to bits because it's a nice relief to healing folks but I feel like I'm dragging my party down a lot and I just want to get better..

enmity =/= dps for smn or any job use reduce enmity actions, I always be top dps and I in bottom of the enmity bar.

Like others said Garuda should be used manually... her skills are best in direct combination with your own.
F.e cong with trisaster, misasra2 or her aoe skill with your dot-spreading skill. if you let her fight on her own,
you will face 2 situations which are annoying for you (wasted dot extand) and your tank/melees (her pushback atk).

if you want to increase dmg via materia/gearsets - there are three stats which can combine in different ways for different effects:
det will increase your base dmg for dots, burst and your egi. ss increase dot dmg as well, but mainly decrease your cds you may get an extra Ruin III while in trance. crit for raw dmg self explaining: up to 3k ruin lll, 5k fester, 12k deathflare. most common build is (like nearly in all dd cls) is crit/det, but crit/ss could come in handy if you build your rota with raw over dot dmg - det/ss for the opposite, dot & egi dmg.

Nope don't give up or let your enjoyment fade... just practice, try and error is totally normal and to be honest... fun should always stay above statistics/rankinglists.
