The Mercydian's Plight: Is there no hope? ::SPOILERS::

So... after completing all of BCoB,SCoB, and up to T11 on FCoB, you find out more of the ancient civilization Mercydia and it's dragons. It saddened me so greatly after beating T10 to see all those Mercydians just trapped there in their stasis pods... constantly longing for their savior, Bahamut, to finally rescue them or end their misery. I have such a bleeding heart and well up with sadness every time I listen to "Answers" and realize just how well it fits into their plight and downfall.

I know a few spoiler-ish things thanks to some rude people (and myself, but I only spoiled myself a few things after I had heard spoilers.) If to help clarify for me, it's ok if you spoil T12-13 I'm ok with that.

But all that aside I realize once you defeat T13, apparently you deactivate the coils for good, so Bahamut can not keep regenerating. Is there no way though to save those trapped Mercydians? Are the actually dead now? From the dialog in T10, it seemed they were being kept alive, so their faith could keep renewing Bahamut and allow him to stay in our realm.

I just wish I could do more to help them, is turning the switch off to their life the only means they have to end it all? Is there no way we can rescue them? I do imagine they would be filled with rage and sorrow, but maybe in Heavensward we might have some dragon allies on our side to maybe reason with them?

I guess I'm just too big hearted for my own freaking good, and it just saddens me to see them suffer the way they did at the hand of the Allagans. I seriously dislike the Allagans now thanks to them (Not the good ones like Unei and Doga, and the Princess, she seemed she was good.)

Any and all lore I don't know about, or any answers as to what befalls them now would be much appreciated! I hope we learn more of Mercydia and it's people/dragons.

[Also... YAY FIRST THREAD I MADE IN THE LORE FORUMS.. gosh I'm such a nerd @.@]

They're dead now, yes. Though simply freeing them might have been an option, literally every single thing that came out of one of those tubes was thousands of years unstuck in time and absolutely furious. Moreover, they didn't seem to be the more cognizant dragons, but the younger, simpler, "following the lead" draconian beasts. I assume that we're meant to accept that there's just no way we could let them out and have them not thrash and burn everything they saw until they were put down - that they'd never have calmed down before that point, never have been able to understand their distance from their home and time, never have been cognizant of the situation beyond the rage, and that, for all intents and purposes, the Allag killed them long ago and we were just letting a millenniums-spanning death finally end.

    Obvious T12/T13 spoilers:

The Coils both regenerated Bahamut and kept the Meracydian dragons alive. In order to stop Bahamut's resurrection, we had to destroy the Meracydians. The only reason we go into the Burning Heart is because Bahamut is revived enough to attempt to stop us from deactivating the final Coil. After our tussle in the Burning Heart he is weakened enough to not stop Alisaie from turning off the final Coil and dissipating him back to the aether and simultaneously killing all the Meracydians on life support.

A thousand years of torment, they would have all been mad by that stage. Frankly it was merciful letting them finally die. That said it showed the levels of depravity that the Allagans reached before the end even more than the Crystal Tower did. I don't think all Allagans were bad but I wouldn't be surprised if we have yet to see horrors committed by the Allagans. They had a world spaning empire if their talk is accurate.

:Sigh: It's as I feared, so there was just no hope in saving them. The idea of torturing anyone, beast, man, beastman... it kind of just breaks my heart, and tugs at my heartstrings. I hope we find out more of the Allagan Empire, the Mercydians, and eventually visit Mercydia!

And what could have we done if there was a way? That we may have reason with them? Look Bahamut, he didnt care that 6000 years passed, he didnt care that the allags were dead, he didnt care that all the people living actualy were inocent. This rage was soo soo deep that all he was thinking is " DEAD TO ALL!!! " . The Meracyans would not have acted any different. I'm not saing is not a terrible thing what happened to say, I would be like them if I suffer something similar. Their rage and vengance is justified but not with innocent people.

It kinda makes me wonder just how much Salina knew, because Dalamud was still in the air when the remaining Allagans wanted so badly to see the Crystal Tower put to use again. Did they mean for the Dalamud up-link to be put back into use as well for the sake of "hope," or did they include some plan to decommission it? We have no way of knowing exactly how far gone the average Allagan was as far as ethics, ultimately.

Turning off the internment hulks IS turning off the life support to the Meracydians in tanks. That's literally what hitting the button on the T5/T9/T12/T13 consoles does.

The Meracydian dragon's plight is just pretty sad overall. The song "Answers" seem to relate to them, too.

In the end, it was nice to finally put them out of their misery.

Also, it kinda reminds me of FF10's Aeon's (especially those in Mt. Gagazet)

Dalamud wasn't created until Xande resumed power, and for all appearances, he did it explicitly so he could strengthen the void gate in the Crystal Tower. While he probably gave other reasons for the creation of Dalamud to the rest of the Allagans, it became pretty clear near the end of his regime that he was completely unhinged.

Until Xande's resurrection, the Crystal Tower was just a monument, as well as a solar power plant. It was only until the former's return that it turned into something nastier. It was a symbol of hope and prosperity before Xande turned it into a instrument of death. Xande was also the one that subjugated Mercydia, and it would be reasonable to believe that he frankly didn't care about 'ethics' at that point either.
