    [SUGGESTION] New Crafting Class

As an artist myself I've often wondered why Eorzea lacks in such a department. I was speaking with a friend and we came up with some general ideas on what this new crafter class could do in terms of impacting the world of Eorzea for the better!

    Crafter: Artist
Concept idea: To be Eorzea's sculptor, painter, aesthetician, dye-monger, and anything else 'art' related.

So let's break down each part of the concept.

Sculptor items of interest should be related to stone primarily as a goldsmith, armorer or blacksmith doesn't really fit into this type of media (stone). It could range from basic sculptures of the twelve, to primals, or anything that Square-Enix could imagine. The best part is that it would be easy to implement because the models for those kinds of things already exist in the game, they would just have to apply a stone 'skin' over the model and bam! stone sculpture. Some more specific examples of what I'd find cool to see:

(Remember all these are in stone based material)
    Ifrit
    Garuda
    Titan
    Bismark
Ravana (the other new one, I think that is its name)
    Shiva
    Ramuh
    Leviathan
    Magitek (all types)
    Hydaelyn (The crystal)
    Minfillia
    Cid Garlond
    Godbert Manderville
    Mini-Limsa Lominsa
    Mini-Gridania
    Mini-Ul'dah
    Nanamo
    Cloud of Darkness
    Bahamut
    Alexander
    Odin
    Phoenix
    Kan-E-senna
    Raubahn
    Merlwyb
    Louisoix
    Dalamud
    Crystal Tower

Side note on sculpting: The artist should also be able to craft mannequins wherein a player can equip and show off gear sets they have collected. Mannequins already exist in the game if you have done crafting story quests you've probably seen them sporting your gear you crafted so should be able to be implemented easily.

So as you can see there are lots of possibilities they could run with for the sculpting part of the artist. Moving along we run into paintings, something that I feel is a bit under appreciated in housing items. Currently we only have a few different painting we can put on the wall (around 7-9 iirc) however there are so many beautiful places in the game that can be painted!

    Ul'dah (in game already)
    Limsa (in game already)
    Gridania (in game already)
The Footfalls -Silent King (Western Thanalan)
    Vesper Bay (Western Thanalan)
    The Silver Bazaar (Western Thanalan)
Church of St. Adama Landama (Eastern Thanalan)
    The Burning Wall (Eastern Thanalan)
    The Gold Bazaar (Eastern Thanalan)
    Highbridge (Eastern Thanalan)
    Sultan Tree (Central Thanalan)
    The Unholy Heir (Central Thanalan)
    The Bonfire (Central Thanalan)
    The Gold Saucer (Southern Thanalan)
    Byregot's Strike (Southern Thanalan)
    Castrum Meridianum (Northern Thanalan)
    Dalamud's Talons (Northern Thanalan)
    Ceruleum Field (Northern Thanalan)
    Summerford Farms (Middle Noscea)
    Oschon's Embrace (Lower Noscea)
    Red Rooster Stead (Lower Noscea)
    The Salt Strand (Lower Noscea)
    Pharos Sirius (Western Noscea)
    Tide Gates (Western Noscea)
    Castrum Occidens (Eastern Noscea)
    Bloodshore (Eastern Noscea)
    Thalaos (Upper Noscea)
    U'Ghamaro (Outer Noscea)
Floating City of Nym (Outer Noscea)
    Spirithold (Central Shroud)
    The Guardian Tree (Central Shroud)
    Haukke Manor (Central Shroud)
    Mirror Plank Docks (Central Shroud)
    Lifemend Stump (Central Shroud)
    Hopeseed Pond (Central Shroud)
Sanctum of the Twelve (East Shroud)
    Little Solace (East Shroud)
    Castrum Oriens (East Shroud)
    Urth's Gift (South Shroud)
    Rootslake (South Shroud)
Lost City of Amdapor (South Shroud)
    Finder's Bluff (North Shroud)
    Hyrstmill (North Shroud)
    Proud Creek (North Shroud)

There are more places in which can be painted and would look neat but I just did the three main city-state areas for sake of examples. Moving along to the next portion we have aesthetician, HOWEVER, this is not dealing with hairstyles as that is something already in the game and no sense in stepping on another NPCs toes. Instead this would deal with tattoos, something that is possible in the game (see Legacy Tattoo) however is not utilized, which is a same because I so badly want to tat' up my character! Since this crafter class so far has no option really of utilizing materia like the others the use of tattoos would become their way of "materia melding". It would work like this:

    1) Player who wants tattoo would select a portion of their body (Left Arm Upper, Left Arm Lower, Right Arm Upper, Right Arm Lower, Back Upper, Back Lower, Right Chest, Left Chest, Torso, Left Leg Upper, Left Leg Lower, Right Leg Upper, Right Leg Lower, Neck Front, Neck Back) and select a materia.
    2) Depending on the materia asked will depend on what the tattoo looks like (its not random and a preview of what the tattoo would look like in that spot should be given BEFORE the tattoo is applied) For example: If I ask for a Strength IV materia on Back Upper it would show me a tribal dragon design, if I ask for a Mind IV materia on Back Upper it would be a tree of some (or nature-like design)
    3) Artist will apply tattoo using dye and catalyst. All materials are used up upon tattoo application (100% success always)
    4) If player gets tired of tattoo they can issue a removal from an artist or for a fee (gil) speak with a special NPC to remove the tattoo that way (offers new a gil sink)

Finally artists also have an in depth knowledge of color, so why not allow them to make all the current colors (minus the item shop/retainer obtained ones) including new colors, like other shades of metallic and pastel, and new shades of Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Red, etc etc, for a greater variety of options.

Okay long post over, but what do you think? Does Eorzea deserve an artist in her realm? I personally think we are long overdue for one!

Love it, though I don't think it should be an entirely new crafting class... got enough of those, too much development to create new AF/quests/and such to add another.

It could be like a bonus crafting capability once you've hit any kind of 50 crafter & unlock tiers in-sync with with your highest crafting mastery-tier.

Or its own new system that maybe piggy-backs off crafting a little.

Treat it as an "art," rather than a "craft."

To start, we could get both Painter & Sculptor.

It could even have its own method of creation that's its own style of 'crafting mini-game,' if we wanted to get really advanced.

Lol, you joined the forums in 2011 and don't know?

Tanaka said having crafting classes released in intervals would cause a problem with economy and therefore released all crafting classes together to alleviate future economy problems that would arise otherwise.
So my personal argument is this, if we're still stuck with classes, we're stuck with the same crafting classes forever. Tanaka still haunts this game until several 1.0 elements are removed.

This class does nothing in terms of crafting for battle. Its all about looks. IE: tattoos and housing items So not really sure how it will break the economy since all the items it would be able to craft are based on taste and are complete optional and do not create ways for people to become "more powerful" thus needed. Tanaka doesn't really haunt this game as much as people think he does. Also we are stuck with classes in combat but they have added new combat classes as well as are going to release job without classes (proving they are not really tied or 'haunted' to Tananka's old ways) Furthermore, Tanaka made that comment when Housing was not a thing nor was it really considered to be a thing as it was the Adventurer's Guild (inn) is where we were supposed to call our home.

For that matter entirely, I feel they absolutely could add additional crafting classes if they wanted, however most of the current classes already impact each of the types of building for the "time-period" (high-medieval fantasy) needed for combat and general wares; but an armorer is not a sculptor in the artist sense; neither is a blacksmith or goldsmith. Carpenters are not painters, artists are painters. Pretty much 1.0 is thrown out the window in terms of can's and cant's, don't limit yourself so much...its not healthy.

I'll add him to the sculpture part! I completely forgot! (also forgot about putting a bit in there about Mannequins)

This bonus feature (shouldn't be considered a 'crafter' for the purpose of feature/mechanics) should be entitled, "Artisan."

The stone media is used by the goldsmith, as is the bone media, used to make marble and thaumaturge weapon, respectively. Also the other crafting classes are used to equip or consumables. All this does is make furniture and glamor items, which other crafting classes already do. Dyes and skins are also doable by other jobs as well. However I don't think it would be a bad idea to have a "workshop" of sorts like Diabolo III has where players can submit things to the developers. Maybe do Photoshop paintings and upload them to the the server and use them as items.

Also, for it to be a class, you have to have a 1-50. What do you propose we level it with?

    Main hand: Magic Brush
Secondary: some kind of fine tuning tool/chisel (they could make a tool up)

You know what I've been wanting since 1.0 though? Photographer. Somehow manipulate the scroll lock camera to adjust the scene and lighting to produce a skillfully captured photo, then offer it on the marketboard (market wards back then) and ppl could buy them then save them to their HDD/SSD.

While I like the idea of a new crafting class, what concerns me most about these ideas is that they (with the possible exception of the tatoo artist, more on that in a sec) seem to be exclusively geared toward furnishing-type content. This has two big problems: First off, furnishings currently provide no stat bonuses or other benefits other than to look pretty in your home. This means that every creation is a luxury item, something people will only buy if they have the spare money to do so. Secondly, folks who own houses are a pretty small fraction of the population (though, admittedly, they're a small fraction that is more likely to have extra money for luxury items). That's an awfully small minority to devote an entire crafting class to.

As for the tattoo artist idea, this has some promise - particularly if we allow for the possibility that they are MORE than just pretty pictures. You mentioned using Materia to affect the appearance of the tattoo, but what if tattoos actually had stats? A tattoo could be, in effect, another gear slot. There would need to be invisible tattoos available for people who want the stats but don't like tattoos, but I think most players would appreciate the chance to ink up a bit AND have it contribute to their effectiveness in their class.

I don't think that any crafting class is likely to succeed if it's solely focused on pretty luxury items. A crafting class needs to be able to make practical items along with the pretty items.
