Moar parser, its always good to have more data, even if the data is just that your friends are dps divas and you shouldn't raid with them =)

Pick your guildies well friends, getting along is more important than progression.

And woe to the player who goes into a pug with paper skin and a chip on his shoulder; man up, smile at the trolls, and power through. Or just, leave. Your sanity is more important than soldiery.

    Good advice

Tiny point: I'd emphasize that good progression is sometimes key in getting along. People who want to make progress but can't tend to become cranky and frustrated if issues aren't addressed. This is where I think that tools like parsers can help in both progression and in community development when players use the information correctly.

I'd love a parser. I would be nice to know just for my sake of being a good player. Let me know if im doing acceptable dps or not instead of me playing a class/job wrong. I've seen it used the wrong way tho. People complain about someone else's numbers and all that nonsense.

I would wager a vast majority of top tier players (those that clear Coil before it is nerfed/unlocked, or have the raw talent/skill to do so) are not publicly hostile about parsing in their parties. They might chuckle with their co-raiders and friends about how good or bad this or that guy's DPS is relative to his gear, but it's very rare that they will join a random party and ostracize that person just because they parse.

The ones to be concerned about are low to mid tier players who lack any kind of logical reasoning and just treat a parse result as if it is law. These are the ones you typically see chewing people out for being "the worst" DPS (by an extremely small margin and/or without considering other factors), or being chewed out for it and acting as if all parsing is the devil.

These people are the reason we can't have nice things. A parse result is one of many tools one can use to analyze a fight and improve oneself. We have a huge double-standard in our playerbase where tanks and healers are held to a high standard but it's ok for DPS to be mediocre because "oh you can't parse you can't tell me I suck". There are plenty of easy ways to tell if someone is an awful DPS just by watching what they do (and to a much lesser extent, the enmity meter). Though that's hardly a problem unique to DPS in this game, as telling anyone they suck (in so many words) is rarely met with a receptive attitude.

Being elitist isn't a bad thing. It's called "having standards."

Parsers should not be allowed in the dungeon finder. Maybe private parsers but honestly having no parser is better then having one that people can use against you. Mmo gamers are often a sour crowd and it would be used for harassment more then helping people. Maybe a form of non numerical parser could be accepted.

What would a "non-numerical" parser accomplish? The whole point is to gauge effectiveness against what is typically expected of a given role in an encounter; making the information purposely vague or stylized won't help since it still comes down to making comparisons.

Don't need a numerical parser. Se uses internal tests to gauge max potential damage and could have a color indicator on your output compared to thier dps measurement.

...which is still going to communicate whether or not a player is putting out subpar numbers compared to the expectation while leaving it unhelpfully vague. In some ways this could be far worse than providing hard numbers. If you're going to bother to allow players to gauge their performance, don't make them wonder exactly where they're at.

Wrong - when was the last time you used one? They gauge DOT dps quite well now actually.

...Because the visual tick is everyone's DoTs.
