The shapes aren't necessarily similar, but geographically (sometimes culturally, too), the Three Great Continents are essentially akin the Old World. Eorzea is "Africa," Ilsabard is "Europe," and Othard is "Asia." (Sidenote: Do not let this make you forget that Eorzea is actually based on Greece, whereas Garlemald is geographically based on Persia and culturally based on Rome.) If one considered the Old World "three great continents," it wouldn't mean that Australia wasn't a thing. Though I can't say that Meracydia is specifically Australia in this metaphor; Thavnair is apparently the Ottoman territory, but on its own island, and the Americas truly are out there - the mamool brought avacados.
