Is there any point in getting geared up for gathering at this point?

Recently hit 50 MIN/BOT, and from the prices of some of the level 50 gear I'm looking at spending vast amounts of gil without any real prospect of making it back before the new expansion comes out. I bought the militia offhands as they were pretty cheap, and I'm using the level 50 quest reward mainhands and hats, but other than that I'm just wearing random crap from the NPC vendors in Mor Dhona which is more than adequate for gathering normal stuff.

As it is, I'm pretty much only bothering to do any gathering on days when there's a bonus on the GC turnins, but it seems like the investment required to make the next step up to actively farming unspoiled stuff and working towards the Lucis/Supra stuff is just not worth it considering there's only like eight weeks until the expansion...

Because getting fully melded current BiS will give you a headstart when the expansion comes around.

Reaching 4* gathering is quite easy, especially compared to crafting - buy the class specific i55 gear instead of forager's. You should be able to male that gil back selling 1* mats.

If you can easily get 1 star mats, you don't need more yet - at least on my server, nothing else is worth it, the higher mats sell so poorly that you make a lot more money with the 1-stars. As others have said, maybe it'd be worth it to get a head start when Heavensward comes out, as there will be new mats to get then...

If ur not going to play during early access then gearing up for a head start means nothing lol.
Early access is the "only" true head start.

There's very little point I think. If what little we've heard about gear concerning combat classes carries over to gathering then by about level 55 current BiS will start to be outclassed by new more easily obtained gear anyways. There may be some exceptions though-- main hand and offhand. The offhand items are relatively new and the main hand items have seen a few upgrades and are at a relatively high item level (Lucis anyway). I would expect that a better offhand item will be available at level 60 (maybe sooner, but I wouldn't be surprised if a fully melded HQ artisan offhand was better than any other level 59 option), and probably a better main hand tool as well, but it might require a bit of work (I wouldn't expect a 'free' tool to be better than Lucis). Those items, while they'll probably be outdone at 60 with some effort, will probably last the longest. All armor I expect will become obsolete by 57 at the latest.

I'm only speculating, of course, and have no specific knowledge of what might be added. I just know that, obviously what's BiS now won't be BiS when 3.0 hits. All you can do is try to figure out at what level 'normal' 50+ gear will catch up with level 50 'elite' gear.

I wouldn't do it and expect to make your money back before 3.0
However, getting geared up right now will give you an advantage right after launch when prices of mats will be inflated. It also means that you can stall gearing up in the new gathering gear for a little bit, and I'm going to assume that those new gears will ALSO be inflated very much in the beginning..

So, if you have any interest in earning some gil by gathering, just gear up slowly and try to be 3 star ready by 3.0 it SHOULD pay off once 3.0 launches and prices on new mats are inflated for the first few weeks, just don't expect it to make a huge difference right away.
