Lip colors

I've been quite confused about this ever since launch, but with Heavensward on the horizon and now having the DX11 benchmark/creator to play with... It's still so weird I have to bring it up.

How exactly do lip colors work???

Some look like poor quality, badly done Paint jobs (as in actually made in Paint). Some have virtually no difference between their light and dark options, while some totally pop in one and practically vanish in the other. Some are not visible at all, either in dark or in light setting. And some go from popping, bad Paint jobs to invisible, as you go through from light to dark shades. While some seem to behave completely differently depending on skin color. All the while seemingly most, if not all, of them manage to retain their "lipgloss" quality, making the lips shiny, regardless of coloration.

Of course I tinkered with Au Ra here, but from what I remember, this is the same across all races. And mind you, even face paints seem to behave oddly like this, at the very least in this particular character creator. I really don't understand what's been going on here, but seeing how DX11 still retains the ... weird mess, I'd just like know. What's up with these?? Why can't (wouldn't?) it be fixed?

I think lip coloring should be done away with honestly to open up more options elsewhere with character customization. So many better alternatives.

Hey now. I think it's a nice option to have to let us diversify our characters that much more.

That said, I noticed when I was making a Male Au Ra in the benchmark that there were some mouths that lip color just didn't show up even when you used the Dark option with Black color, and this is with a light skinned character.

I'm not sure if it's some bug or whatnot, but I don't think I ever had any issues with lip color not working with any of the original races when I was making my main and making alts.

I just assumed it was something specific to Au Ra. I was trying out different lip colours on the females, and all of them ended up looking kind of grey. On my elezen the lips look actually red, but you can't get that on Au Ra. I assume it's a combination of original skin colour + the lipstick that decides the result.

Example: Beard(s) separate from "Facial Features." Or moustaches & the like. Or sideburn options.

For Au Ra, it could've been horn or scale color. For Mi'qote, skin patterns (e.g. leopard).

Already a few far greater options I've listed.

For ladies it could be like additional adornment options like headbands & the like.

Or choosing a style of bangs or no bangs instead of always being forced one way or another.

Honestly though, we just need better/more customization options in general.

Like swapping which color is the dominant in highlighted hair, more beards, more tattoos that aren't cutesy butterflies & such, body tats, better muscle sliders, all facial features available to all faces (esp. for Au Ra), & so on.

so how would REMOVING lip color enable these things?

My biggest complaint with lip colors is that there's no RED option. I've honestly been trying to figure out exactly WHY there's no red color option for lips.

There's no real red for hair either, only in the highlights. Main colours are just...some off-shade, lighter or darker, but always mixed with other neighbouring colors on the map. :/


And YIKES, for gods' sake, do not even talk about removing lip colors. It's bad enough that regular makeup is grouped together with facepaints (ie tattoos), so you either wear one or the other. @_@
