Why I Decided to Become an Elitist

Being an asshole is not synonymous with being an elitist, but being an elitist may be synonymous with being an asshole. There are a whole lot more assholes in the world than there are elitists, it's just that every elitist I've met has in fact also been an asshole.

That's unfortunate. However, I've known many people who identify as elitist, in so much that they prefer to play with similarly skilled and dedicated players, that are kind and helpful and never rip into new players. You assume you've only met asshole elitists because likely they are the most vocal. The kind ones tend to keep quiet and you have no idea you even met them. This creates a distinct confirmation bias that your post displays.

That right there betrays the reason for your confirmation bias. Also try to remember that the human brain has a distinct tendency to remember negative experiences more than positive ones. It's a survival instinct. However, that doesn't make it accurate.

Many of the people who rage on others after one mistake are often the ones who caused the wipe...Yep there are tools who think they are elite that clearly are not. Without a doubt. My first post in this thread states I do not know who is worse. People who start insulting and screaming immediately...don't like them any more than the people who demand/expect to be carried. I'll say it again its a group/social thing. We should compromise...If you are the type that knows you struggle with new/difficult content you should gear yourself very well and attempt to do some research on your job and the new encounter you are going to attempt. You should do this because it is polite and you are aware that you bring down the experience of others. If you have knowledge and are skilled you be patient, encourage rather insult, teach what you know, you should do this because you can help someone who is struggling, it polite and nice.

I'm simply having a peaceful conversation. Not even arguing really. I guess this is when you get all defensive for no reason I guess. I point out factual details about how the human brain functions and perceives the world (yes factual. These things are well known) and I guess that it's my fault you want to ignore that. Still doesn't make the assumptions you're making about people you've never even met accurate. Specifically about all the kind "elitists" that walk right by you ever day and you don't even know it. You're stubbornly and actively propagating the prejudice that elitist is automatically bad. After this statement...

You seem to at one moment acknowledge that they aren't necessarily be all bad but then continue on with your prejudices anyway. You sir are a hypocrite. That kind of attitude directly contributes to the negative environment so many people complain about.

If you want to make those assumptions about people, fine. At least admit to the negativity that you yourself help propagate with those assumptions. NOW I'm arguing with you. Do you see how you immediately and through your own actions changed the nature of this interaction? This is the kind of mess I see in game all the time from people "calling out" elitists. They created the negative environment but point blame at elitists the entire time completely failing to accept any fault of their own in the matter. Just as I'm sure your follow up post will continue to do here. This will somehow be all my fault, or at least that's what you'll convince yourself of.

At the end of the day the difference between us is simple. I'm arguing for people to stop making assumptions about one another. You're trying to argue that one group may be entirely comprised of a-holes. I'm spread understanding. You're spreading prejudice. Do you really think that your behavior is acceptable?

A quick Google search about elitism shows that the term and the negative connotations that come with it, in particular their treatment of newer players, are not some recent invention and has been around for years across multiple mmo games as a descriptor of poor behavior.

I literally had someone say that I was stupid and elitist for wanting to be good and practicing to be one of the best at whatever class I play/main, and doing content with like-minded folks is a stupid reason for playing the game loool. What's crazy is she was in effect trying to make herself feel superior for not wanting/caring about being good by trying to make me feel inferior for wanting to be good and wanting to play with people that are good. Ah sweet irony.

And to those upset/hurt by assholes - I had one of THOSE elitist refer to himself as the 1% who can down t9 (after it was unlocked in DF lol) Sooo - the new term for "elitist jerks" is now the 1%. Power to the true elitist! Fuck the 1%! ^^

Ahem, i have been insulted by people coming from on both sides of this argument. Being pressured into doing coil by people wasn't my idea. Nor was being ditched at titan x, called undeserving for asking for story mode coil, talked around for not clearing t9, and amoung other things.

I do have an interest in learning things, and look at a written guide, but if I have to be a complete and utter jackass to get better, then I won't do it. I shouldn't have to give a resume to determine whether or not I'm part of the "peasants" some doof is referring to on social media. Even if i knew my skill relative to the server im on, I simply do not identify with the elite in this game. What do you think I hear when someone says that folks that haven't done said hot new raid before echo should just YouTube it?

...so yeah, I'll do the legwork, I'll down the potions, I'll learn and wipe till I clear.
But do NOT insist I forgive people for being blowhards and making me stressed out over where i am ingame. That is my choice to make.
