Story - Twelve Champions Of Zodiark

Hi everyone! I'm here to propose a new little addition to the story of Final Fantasy 14, and like a lot of other elements of the game, is heavy on fan service. AAANND the post will contain SPOILERS for the main story, so if you haven't completed the story up to, and including, PATCH 2.5 quests then you're probably best to stop reading now.

    *************************************

So, I'd first of all like to state that the foundation of this idea is based on the *ASSUMPTION* that 'The Twelve' were created by Hydaelyn, seeing as their origin has yet to be revealed. I believe there is a strong possibility that this is the case, seeing as how they were around before the arrival of the Elezen, Miqo'te, Lalafell, Roegadyn and Hyur. So I guess I'll go on to explain my idea.

We know that ‘The Twelve’ exist and were created by Hydaelyn. Zodiark also created twelve champions which, like their creator, are pure evil and exist in The Void. The Ascians work to create conflict in the world thereby weakening the barriers between the world of Hydaelyn and The Void. Throughout history the only champion of Zodiark to have come close to entering the world of Hydaelyn is The Cloud Of Darkness, failing to do so when G’raha Tia ends Xande’s covenant with it.
As Hydaelyn weakens further while the story progresses and the realm is plunged deeper in to conflict, especially with the Dravanians attacking Ishgard, the other champions of Zodiark grow more determined to enter the world of Hydaelyn. These champions (as a fan service) are the main antagonists/final bosses from the main entries in the Final Fantasy series.

    FF1 – Chaos
FF2 – The Emperor Of Palamecia
FF3 – The Cloud Of Darkness
    FF4 – Zeromus
    FF5 – Neo Exdeath
    FF6 – Kefka
    FF7 – Safer Sephiroth
    FF8 – Ultimecia
    FF9 – Necron
FF10 – Yu Yevon (While possessing Braska’s Final Aeon)
    FF12 – The Undying
    FF13 – Orphan or Barthandelus

I’ve tried to make this as lore friendly as possible, while acting as a fan service. I haven’t typed out the specifics of how I believe this would fit in to the story here, because it would make this post unbearably long, but I know this would fit in to the story of the game as it currently stands, but I'm not sure how Heavensward is going to affect the lore and the story.

Anyway, I’d really appreciate any feedback or questions about this. The huge amount of potential fan service is just unbearably awesome (to me at least). Thanks for reading!

Personally I feel like the lore for XIV should stay solely to the world of XIV. Having crossovers (not eastereggs, like the bar in Mor Dhona being named after the one in VII) for mini-events and such are always fun, but I don't think they should really be something that heavily impacts the storyline/lore of the world, even more so when it's something big like this.

But that's just what I think of it.

This thread really should be in the Lore section by the way.

Although I agree with Bacent that trying to shoehorn past FF protagonists/antagonists into the game's storyline at every turn would just cheapen the experience, there was a theory on the Lore forum not long after version 1.0 shut down similar to Liam's idea.

The theory was, that as Ferne confirmed that the Garlean Empire has (or rather, had) fourteen Legions in it's miltary, each led by a Legatus, and that there were fourteen main series FF games, and that it has been noted repeatedly that Nael van Darnus, the Legatus of the VIIth Legion, had a striking similarity in personality and story to Sephiroth from FFVII, that therefore each Garlean Legion's commanding Legatus was therefore based (or at least referenced) the main antagonist for it's corresponding FF game.

I haven't heard much more stated about this theory lately so I'm going to take it with a grain of salt, but it's very similar to the idea made by the OP. And given the fact the FFIII's Cloud of Darkness already appears fittingly as the final boss in the World of Darkness for the Crystal Tower set of raids, that kind of blows that theory out.

Or maybe I'm just flapping my gums here.

As I say it is just an idea, but the thought of being able to battle the modt evil from the FF universe in a lore friendly, yet somewhat out of the way setting, appeals so much to me.

In reply to Bacent, I can't feel but point out that the entire Syrcus Tower arc has been torn straight from FF3.

Also note that the Crystal Tower stuff is purely site quest raiding stuff that doesn't have the lore being there since the very start of the game, and even then they had to be careful with how the implemented it.

I really don't think it would go over well having 'fan service' acting as the main lore of the game. Side stuff I'm ok with (As in CT/ST/WoD isn't main story driven, and you don't have to do them), since people don't technically 'have' to do it, or mini storylines like when you're working on getting your soul stones/advanced job skills.

Very true. The driving idea behind this was to see some of the most classic FF villains as fan service, but in a lore friendly manner. The Crystal Tower arc was handled very well in my opinion, better than a lot of the story elements, and I would like to see some more of that appearing in the future. I shall ponder on this further, and wait to see how the Heavensward release affects the lore.
