Apparently werewolves are a thing in the Final Fantasy universe. Will there ever be an expansion that introduces them? Like a Black Shroud expansion or something?

They are?
I'd rather have a remote island full of dinosaurs....

No thanks. lol
On the note of Gnoles in XI, they were wolves that would transform into beastmen-like wolves (they go from all fours to standing erect; and they also had a leader, his name was Alpha Gnole Anders who would iirc attack San d'Oria [S] if you didn't protect the outpost things. So they were capable of higher intellectual thought (they created battle plans)...I even want to say the leader said random things while he was fighting...could be wrong though...I hated that boss and his Plenilune Embrace...
EDIT: Also looked up a bit more information on their background:
"It was the Shadow Lord himself that first unleashed these fearsome wolfmen upon the continent of Quon. Though gnoles are able to speak the common tongue, albeit in broken form, they have no unique customs or culture of their own. Never taking up weaponry, these ferocious beasts rely solely upon tooth and claw guided by animalistic savagery to render their enemies bloodied and lifeless heaps. Some have gone so far as to speculate that the gnoles are the former vikings of the northlands, their bodies controlled by dark sorcery. At night these ferocious beasts grow stronger, automatically regenerating their health. Nevertheless, they are hunted by brave adventurers at all hours, in order to obtain the gnole's coveted claw, which can be worth up to 10,000 gil if used in the right situations."
So created by the Shadow Lord, sounds like they never were men but rather a creation of beast of higher intellect. That being said Werewolves or Gnoles in XIV would be fun...give us the fabled West Shroud, SE, and put them there.

Eh, they are and aren't. In some they are just enemies with no real lore. I think the most lore I've seen for "Werewolves" were for the Gnoles in FFXI saying that they came from the north and were once men. (Memory is hazy)
Iirc, that was just a speculation that some npcs spoke of, like a legend, don't think it was ever confirmed fully or will be. Though they could count as were'wolves' still

There was only 1 werewolf in FFXI. Haty roamed Konchant Highlands at night during a Full Moon. Then Bendigeit Vran would appear in the same area at night during a New Moon. Both were the same level, same Hp and dropped the same throwing weapon.
When Wings of the Goddess came out they added Gnoles. Part of the lore was based on the fact Gnolles would go from a four legged beast and stand upright on two legs (like behemoths) given specific conditions. They also were affected by the Moon phase, and specific attacks based on how they were standing (four or two legs). The wiki lore said they understood and spoke a broken form of common language and were possibly former Vikings tainted by dark magic.
