Even after looking at those pictures I'm having a hard time figuring out their heights. Does anyone know them yet? Either way, if the males are super tall I'll just play a female one.

Okay, that's it. I demand that SE reimplement path companions. Mine has to look like this.
As much as I panned 1.0 for being the weird thing that it was, aesthetics don't have much of anything to do with why the risks taken with 1.0 caused it to flop (among other things, like that game being horribly incomplete). The point of races is that there's supposed to be some sort of diversity. The current 5 races cover the basics (and even then miqo'te have rubbed people the wrong way due to their being more human-like than FFXI's mithra).My point wasn't that beastial races will drive people away but such a race is a high risk to resources. I don't expect SE to be taking risks at the moment. 1.0 isn't that long ago. They are going to play it safe until they feel comfortable that what they have is secure enough to play with risk. Making a new race that in the end aren't played by many people isn't going to be a good investment and in the end games are products for businesses. They need to produce products people actually are going to use.
As pretty as they are, Au ra are really just normal-sized humans with cosplay parts glued on to their bodies with the option of full body paint. It's not gonna sink the game in any way, but it displays a limit self-imposed by the developers.
The clawed hands would simply mean certain gloves wouldn't fully cover their hands (sort of how trolls in WoW have bare feet regardless of footwear; a rule that also applies to tauren, draenei and pandaren).To be honest the other reason is probably that creating a new race that matches what we see in the concept art probably would have taken a lot more work than the Au Ra did. Those clawed hands, for example, would take a lot more customisation of current armour designs to accommodate for.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)

Well if auri are based on jp demos, there's a wide range of possibilities, from spiritual beings aligned to light, to the demon kings a la Satan, Beelzebub, etc...

Monday cannot come fast enough ; ;
As a woman who is 5'8" irl. I will graciously accept this as a compliment. XD
In all seriousness, yeah, Maleqo'tes are pretty dang short compared to the other male races (aside from Lalas).
I think the Lala heights are pretty crazy. 2'10" to 3'2". I thought they were 3'0" to 4'0" as those that is the average height of a real little person. So Lalas are absolutely teeny tiny.
