Reported each and every one.
That might have been a solution 5 to 10 years ago, but now it is to easy to fake an IP address.
Which is why they need to ban the people who buy gil.
Ban the buyers and eventually no one would buy gil, either because potential buyers are banned or they are to afraid to buy. As a result gil sellers would make no money and eventually leave the game. In the long run the game would be healthier.

This is an oft touted "solution" and it wouldn't work. People who break the rules in the first place don't think they're going to get caught so even the harshest of punishments wouldn't really curb the amount of people buying.
Still doesn't require multiple threads.
With this character's death, the thread of prophecy remains intact.

No he's not part of the problem. As a customer, he shouldn't have to sacrifice his gaming time to report "each and every one". That's part of the reason why we pay a sub, so that SE has the funds to deal with these game-breaking issues, not just ignore them, and keep the cash.
I would like to believe that more people would report the spam if it didn't take so god damn long to do so, and the gm's did something immediately rather than *investigate* an obvious spamming bot.
As it stands, reporting the spam is perceived as an extreme waste of time. I could take two minutes to report each character that spams me, and easily be out 30 min per gaming session. The sad part about this, out of the 15+ characters I report, I probably only reported a couple of accounts. Which might be banned next week, so if I report more tomorrow, I'll probably be reporting the same accounts.

Jesus, where have you been since the game's been out?
I didn't realize the customers job are suppose to be Sherlocke Holmes and sniff out the RMT's, block and report them, instead of actually playing the game...
Blocking doesn't help, they keep coming back every time you turn around. You block 1 = 5 more have come from the void.
STILL have the same people in my blacklist too...for months!
Give us The Detective / Eorzean Police / Judge job in-game with some perks I'll ban them myself.
it's so good playing in tonberry. i can count the number of rmt tells i received since i played on 2.0 release in 1 hand (no extra fingers). so rare i even remember when i got it.

A simple solution would be to give us players more options for managing our chat log. An options page where we could set parameters for tells would be a good starting point.
e.g
Receiving /tell parameters
- Player level - range from 1-50
- New players - check box (or a time frame in days or weeks)
- Friends list - check box
- FC members - check box
- LS members - check box
etc etc.
