I really feel for you, I have a number of characters, and everytime I created a new one, I would be swamped with these messages,
I think my record 'tells' recieved to date is 53 in one sitting, and I B-list them straight away as well.
I was tearing my hair out because it is an endless stream, especially if you change location, within 30 seconds of appearing in a new zone I usually get 1 or 2 tells,
So I spend 10-15 minutes B-listing these morons before I can continue onto my game, which we all pay for,
and yes, it does ruin the experience ingame, because you just feel like logging out and playing something else.
So, yes I feel for you and SE really do need to address this situation, especially, as you say, this is the No.1 Question asked.

ahh the joys of being in odin where u get 1-2 tells from a gold seller in a week :P
Why do I feel as if I'm the only one not bothered by this. I'm always on, get a lot of spam and I just don't care, I ignore it, move on, and play. I have my chat set so that it will display everything except tells and if I get a tell I'll simply quickly switch over to check what it was and then switch back. Sure they should mediate how much RMT there is but I think cancelling a preorder and saying that they don't care for the community sounds like a child throwing a fit because he didn't get what he wanted. Have fun in whatever other game you want to play! I'll be preparing for Heavensward :P
I also have /tells in a separate tab with the chime off. I usually get a /tell every minute. I rarely even check the tab because I know it's RMT 99.9% of the time. A child throwing a fit? The /tell option has been pretty much taken away. Our social ability has been hamstrung in a genre which thrives on its community and social interactions. This is extremely troubling, as is the constant harassment. If this isn't something to complain about and make the devs acutely aware of, I don't know what is. This issue is so bad it has gotten to the point where it's something worthy even unsubbing over, given SE's lack of initiative to improve the situation. Why do I feel as if I'm the only one not bothered by this. Wait...did I miss something? They said they aren't doing the Q&A until the live letter event this weekend because they ran out of time.
Did they do the Q&A and I missed it? O.o
I was confused about this as well.
It wasn't only questions about RMT, but NOBODY'S questions got answered at this month's LL because they RAN OUT OF TIME. I could understand if they answered questions and ignored RMT, but... they didn't even get to do the session! At that time, they said they'd carry the questions over to May's LL. But since the Niconico Con is this weekend, they might do a Q&A session there, too.
People need to have some more patience, imo.

Yup! Agreed. Canceling the preorders because they ran out of time at a live event is just silly IMHO. They are only human...wait until they do the Q&A, then see...I was confused about this as well.

I suppose there is not enough RMT going on on the Japanese servers, so the Japanese question threads are not full of things about it. We all know JPN > everywhere else. (Btw, as far as I remember, there were no Q&A in the latest live letter at all, anyway.)
Also...
You know what's embarrassing? Besides arguing about how not everyone wants to / can do Coils, and calling people bad and whatever because of that?
Getting friend requests from characters with names like [whatever] Sellgil123456. That is embarrassing. The fact that such a game does not seem to have the most basic word filter in place to prevent RMTs to be this shameless about their crap. That is embarrassing. The cumbersome mechanics of saying no to the friend requests, then separately declining the friend requests, then separately blacklisting them, then filing a report in yet another separate window that's way too slow to fill with content and get to working. That is embarrassing. The way that new reply notifications can't be done away with the millions of "close this issue" popups, but an answer has to be opened, only to return to the reply, which then can't even be closed with the actual close button, but has to be clicked away via the cross in the upper right corner. That is embarrassing.
Bans are like band-aids: they might help stop the bleeding (ie. the symptom) from going absolutely everywhere, but they don't actually heal the cut (ie. the injury) itself. Banning is like changing the band-aid time and time again, but the bleeding doesn't stop from that, as it's very apparent in the game. They need to implement methods to actually make the life of RMTs more difficult: improve message filters, improve the way messages are handled (limiting tells for example), improve the ways such characters can be declined and ignored and reported (in addition I'd also say take legal action, but that's apparently too complicated to do). None of this seems to be being done, that's the slacking bit. The regular bans obviously don't help much, since RMTs just keep coming back with newer and newer (and more?) characters every time anyway.

If one person asks me what the meaning of life is, I'll tell them I don't know. If a billion people ask it won't mean I'm any closer to an answer.
Granted rmt is simpler than the meaning of life lol, but if they don't have an answer then they don't have an answer. It doesn't mean that they're necessarily ignoring the problem or the players. I still agree that they could add a few small QoL fixes for the rmt situation, but I wouldn't take the lack of answer too personally.
Same here man. After I turned off the ping sound from tells I hardly even notice it.Why do I feel as if I'm the only one not bothered by this.
